He is listed as both a five-star recruit and the best shooting guard in the 2020 class.

Green spent his first three years at San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno and left as the nation's all-time leading scorer.

Early life

In Merced, California, Green was born. He grew up in Livingston, California. When Green was in third grade, he and his family returned to Fresno, California. He was playing Amateur Athletic Union basketball and training for five hours per day by the sixth grade.

Personal life

Bree Puruganan, Green's mother, has a partial Filipino descent through her grandfather. Marcus Green, his step-father, was a basketball teammate of NBA player DeShawn Stevenson at Fresno's Washington Union High School. He has a younger sibling.

High school career

Green played basketball for San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno for his first three years of high school. He was a full-time starter with 18.1 points and nine rebounds per game as a freshman. He led his team to a runner-up finish in CIF Central Section Division II and the CIF Division II quarterfinals. He received all-American second team and CIF Central Section rookie of the year awards. Green averaged 27.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game in his sophomore season, leading San Joaquin Memorial to a Central Section Division II championship and the CIF Open Division playoffs. He was named MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year and ranked second in the USA Today All-USA California second team.

Green averaged 30.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game for San Joaquin Memorial as a junior. He captured his second straight Central Division II championship. Green surpassed the school career scoring record of 2,288 set by Roscoe Pondexter since 1971. He also helped his team qualify for the CIF Northern California Division I quarterfinals. Green was named USA Today All-USA California player of the year and a member of the All-USA Second Team and MaxPreps All-American second team. He moved to Prolific Prep in Napa, California, for his senior year. He was a member of his team that triumphed the Grind Session World Championship. With Daishen Nix, he shared Grind Session Most Valuable Player awards in March 2020. Green's team won their first game with 31.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and five assists per game, leading his team to a 31–3 record. He has been named Sports Illustrated All-American Player of the Year and to the MaxPreps All-American first team. Green was selected to compete in the McDonald's All-American Game, the Jordan Brand Classic, and the Nike Hoop Summit, but all three games were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to major recruiting firms 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals, Green was a unanimous five-star recruiter and the top shooting guard in the 2020 recruiting class. According to ESPN, he was ranked as the best recruit in his class. Before turning 15 years old, he had received offers from numerous NCAA Division I basketball programs, including Arizona, Florida State, and USC. Green announced on April 16, 2020 that he would play in the NBA G League, forgoing college basketball. He preferred the G League over Auburn, Oregon, and Memphis.

Professional career

Green signed a one-year, $600,000 deal with the NBA G League Ignite, a youth team affiliated with the NBA G League, on April 16, 2020. He was the first player to join the team. In a 127–102 loss to the Raptors 905 in the first round of the playoffs on March 8, 2021, Green scored a season-high 30 points, seven assists, and five rebounds. He had 17.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.

Green was drafted second overall in the 2021 NBA draft, making him the first individual to be drafted out of the G-League, behind former Ignite teammate Jonathan Kuminga and Isaiah Todd. In an 84–76 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, he made his summer league debut with 23 points, five rebounds, and two assists in 30 minutes. Since missing the last three games due to soreness in his right hamstring, he joined the All-Summer League Second Team. He made his preseason debut on October 5 in a 125–119 victory over the Washington Wizards, with 12 points, six rebounds, and two assists. In a 124-106 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on October 20, Green made his NBA debut, putting up nine points, four rebounds, and four assists. In a 107-97 loss to the Boston Celtics, Green put up 30 points and eight threes in a game in Rockets history, becoming the first rookie to put up at least 30 points and eight threes in a game in Rockets history. After a home game victory over the Chicago Bulls that left his lower left leg out of the rotation for a while, Green continued his rookie season with a hamstring injury on his lower left leg. Green returned to the starting line up on Christmas Eve with a score of 20 points from the three-point line in a loss road trip game to the Indiana Pacers after missing 14 games in a month due to a hamstring injury.

Green appeared in the Slam Dunk Contest on February 19, 2022, finishing in third place. In 38 minutes, Green scored 32 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot in 38 minutes, his second 30-point game against the Los Angeles Lakers on March 9, scoring 32 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot. Green lost 123-120 against the San Antonio Spurs on March 28, 2022, 2022, along with four rebounds and assists. Allen Iverson made him the first NBA rookie to score a 30-plus point in five straight games in a row since 1997. Green scored 41 points in his final game as a rookie, in a 130-114 loss to the Atlanta Hawks, the first 40-point game by a Rockets rookie since Hakeemol Olajuwon. He was named Rookie of the Month for March and April at the end of the regular season. He was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team with 17.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.6 assists.

National team career

Green stands for the United States internationally, but he has also expressed concern about representing the Philippines in the future due to his partial Filipino roots. At the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship in Formosa, Argentina, he made his national team debut for the United States. He averaged 9.8 points, two rebounds, and one steal per game in five games, assisting his team in winning the gold medal. After scoring a team-high 15.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, he was named MVP of the 2018 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup in Argentina. At the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Heraklion, Greece, Green captured another gold medal for the United States. He averaged 10.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.7 steals per game as the youngest member of his squad.
