Early life
On March 5, 1989, Jake Matthew Lloyd was born in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Lloyd attended Carmel High School in Carmel, Indiana, where he graduated in 2007.
Personal life
Lloyd argued that his decision to leave acting in 2001 was due to bullying at school and harassment by the media, both in reaction to his role in The Phantom Menace.
Police responded to an alleged assault by Lloyd on his mother Lisa Riley in March 2015. Riley alleged Lloyd arrived at her house and began verbally berating her, according to a statement provided by the Indianapolis Metro Police Department. Lloyd proceeded to physically assaulting her, but she denied press allegations that Lloyd had been suffering from schizophrenia and that he was not taking his medication at the time.
Lloyd was arrested in South Carolina on June 17, 2015, under the name Jake Broadbent, for reckless driving, without a license, and resisting arrest; he failed to stop for a red light, igniting a high-speed police chase. His bail was determined at $10,700 at a hearing on June 22. Lloyd's mother told TMZ on June 23 that he had schizophrenia and that "the family wants to try and get him to help again [...] after he's released from jail." Lloyd was not released on bail.
Lloyd was moved from prison to a mental hospital in April 2016, after being detained for ten months during his trial in Colleton County Detention Center, due to his schizophrenia disorder.
His family released a statement in January 2020 claiming that he has stayed closer to his family and has officially been diagnosed with neuropathic schizophrenia.
Career
Lloyd began his acting career in 1996, playing Jimmy Sweet in four episodes of ER. He was later cast in Unhook the Stars as Jake Warren. In Jingle All the Way, Jamie Langston got his big break. In Apollo 11, he appeared as Mark Armstrong. Lloyd rose to international prominence after George Lucas selected him to appear in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, the first film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Lloyd received the Young Artist Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Lloyd appeared in Die with Me and Madison in 2000, before he resigned from acting, but Madison was not released in theaters until 2005.
