Jaime Mendez (born February 20, 1971) was a former Puerto Rican football free safety, and he was an all-American at Kansas State University.

With 15 interceptions, he is the Wildcats' all-time interceptions leader.

Personal life

Mendez, a Puerto Rican immigrant, married actress Essence Atkins on September 26, 2009 and divorced in 2016. The couple live in Los Angeles. The couple revealed on August 9, 2011 that they were expecting their first child together. On December 25, 2011, Essence gave birth to a boy named Varro Blair Mendez. College career

Mendez set a new K-State record of six interceptions and broke the school's record for interceptive return yardage with 154 yards as a redshirt freshman in 1990. He was voted an honorable mention All-Big 8 as well as the year's newcomer of the year. He was the ninth national interceptor. He made his first appearance on All-Big 8 as a sophomore in 1991 as well as being named third-team All-American. He was ranked third on the team with 79 tackles and fourth in the Big 8 with nine passes broken up. He was named first-team All-Big Eight honors as a junior in 1992 as well as a special mention all-America awards. In a win over Temple, he set a new-day Big 8 record and school record of four interceptions, with three in the first half. He earned first-team All-American recognition as a senior in 1993 and was named first-team All-American honors once more. He was one of eight semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award and the school's first bowl win over Wyoming in the 1993 Copper Bowl, winning 9-2-1.
