Early life and education
Tobia's grandparents were Syrians who immigrated to the United States in the 1950s and spoke Arabic, a word that Tobia says is "the word that I do not know but wish I did." Tobia was raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, as part of a Methodist family, and graduated from Raleigh Charter High School in 2010, serving as president of the Gay Straight Alliance and being instrumental in student life. Tobia applied to Harvard University and was accepted but chose Duke University instead, where they received a master's degree in Human Rights Advocacy. Tobia, a Duke University undergraduate, served as the vice president of Blue Devils United and president of Duke Students for Gender Neutrality.

Career and activism
Tobia is a recipient of the Campus Pride National Voice and Action Award and a Point Foundation Scholar Harry S. Truman Scholar. Their writing has been featured on MSNBC, MTV, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Guardian, BuzzFeed, Jezebel, and other media outlets. They've also served on conference panels and appeared at Harvard University, Princeton University, Columbia University, and several national LGBTQ conferences throughout the country. Before starting a career in television, they worked with the United Nations Foundation, the Human Rights Campaign, and the Astraea Lesbian Foundation for Justice.
Tobia's donation of more than $10,000 for the Ali Forney Center on the Brooklyn Bridge in five-inch heels as part of their Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) commitment to action in September 2013. They were recently recognized by CGI U in 2018 at the University of Chicago for their larger contribution to the LGBTQIA+ community.
