Jacob Mellis Career

Career

Mellis was born in Nottingham and began his career as a trainee with Sheffield United before joining Chelsea in June 2007 for £1 million. He was a member of Chelsea's 2008 squad that reached the FA Youth Cup under new boss Paul Clement, but he was suspended in the 90th minute of the second leg as Chelsea lost 4–2 on aggregate to Manchester City. He made 13 appearances in Chelsea's reserves during the 2008-2009 season, scoring three goals.

He joined Southampton on loan and made his Saints debut in a 3–1 loss at Huddersfield Town on August 29, 2009. He returned to Chelsea in January 2010, but did not make a senior appearance until November 23, 2010, his first Chelsea game, as a replacement for Josh McEachran against MK s appetiton, a 2–1 home win.

Mellis signed for Barnsley on a five-month loan in January. In a 2–0 win over Preston North End on Saturday, Mellis made his Barnsley debut the next day. In a 4–1 loss to Leicester City in the first game seven days later against Ipswich Town, he scored his first Barnsley goal in a next game. Mellis went on to make fifteen appearances and scoring two times.

Mellis was fired by Chelsea in March 2012 after he admitted to starting a fire grenade and causing a complete evacuation at the club's Cobham Training Centre. Billy Clifford, Mellis' teammate, received a fine for admitting to bringing the grenade, which is believed to be from a paintball trip, into Chelsea's Cobham training headquarters. Mellis was on trial at Queens Park Rangers after being released by Chelsea. Mark Hughes, the club's manager, was incredibly impressed by his work and wanted to prolong his trial.

Mellis agreed to a two-year contract with Barnsley's Championship team on June 18, 2012. Mellis scored the first goal in the New York Stadium since its opening on March 12, 2012.

Mellis scored in 4–3 victory over Rochdale on his first game since joining Barnsley, where he set up a goal for John Stones. Mellis made his league debut in a 1–0 win over Middlesbrough seven days later. During a 1–0 victory over Bristol City on September 1, 2012, Mellis scored his first goal for Barnsley, as well as scoring his second goal against Blackburn Rovers. Mellis had a hat-trick assist in a 5–0 victory over Birmingham City on September 22, 2012. Mellis' fourth goal came in a 2–1 victory over Cardiff City two months later on November 24, 2012. Mellis was forced to miss a month due to a dead leg. Mellis made his first team return, where he appeared as a substitute for Jim O'Brien in a 2–0 victory over Leeds United on January 12, 2013. Mellis scored three more goals against Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday, and Hull City following his return (which later was named 2012-2013 Goal of the Season award). Mellis spent his first full season with Barnsley, scoring six goals in thirty-six appearances while assisting the club in remaining in the Championship.

Mellis continued to play in the 2013–14 season, but he suffered with injuries. Mellis scored his first Barnsley goal of the 2013-14 season on December 3, 2013, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 21-0. Mellis scored from a free kick in a 1–1 draw against Birmingham City twenty-eight days later on January 1, 2014. Mellis was dismissed in the last minutes after he "recklessly" leapt in on Wednesday winger Jacques Maghoma, who suffered 1–0 against Sheffield on Wednesday. Mellis returned to the first squad on February 22, 2014, beating Millwall 1–0. Mellis' playing time was soon reduced to a smidgeon due to being on the bench near the end of the season.

Mellis was offered a new deal at Oakwell following Barnsley's promotion to League One in 2014, but the club was turned down and left the club following his release.

Mellis and two other players joined Championship side Blackpool on July 28, 2014. Mellis' medical was discontinued at Blackpool three days later.

In a 2–0 loss at Nottingham Forest, Mellis made his Blackpool debut in the season's first game. However, Mellis sustained an injury while playing against Shrewsbury Town in the League Cup. Mellis made his first team return to Blackpool in a 3–1 loss against Norwich City on September 27, 2014. Mellis sustained an injury that kept him out for weeks.

Mellis went on loan to Oldham Athletic in January 2015, with his first team opportunities limited under new manager Lee Clark. Mellis made his Oldham Athletic debut by appearing as a replacement for Carl Winchester in the 72nd minute in a 3–2 loss to Gillingham two days later. Mellis made his Oldham Athletic return in the 77th minute, when he came on as a replacement for Joseph Mills in the 2–0 loss against Crawley Town on April 6, 2015. Mellis made seven appearances for the club before going on to make seven appearances.

Mellis was released by Blackpool in May 2015 at the end of the 2014-2015 season. Mellis, who was briefly released by Blackpool, was soon linked to Fleetwood Town and Rochdale.

Mellis signed Bury's League One team on a two-year deal on June 30, 2015. In a 1–1 draw against Doncaster Rovers on August 8, he made his debut in the season's opener, coming as a substitute for Tom Pope in the 55th minute. In a 4–1 victory over Port Vale on September 3, he scored his first goal for the Shakers.

Mellis joined Mansfield Town in League Two on May 19th. He renewed his deal in June 2019. He and his colleague Dion Donohue were suspended by the club in August for "an imminent breach of club discipline." Mellis was fined two weeks of wages, but Donohue was released by the club.

Mellis was transferred to Bolton Wanderers, a League One club, on January 31, 2020, where he will continue to work until the end of the season. On June 26, it was revealed that he would be one of 14 senior players fired after their contracts came to an end at the end of the month.

Mellis signed a permanent deal with Gillingham on August 10, 2020, the third signing of the summer. In a 3–1 home win over Oxford United on October 10, he made ten appearances and scored in a 3–1 home victory.

Mellis joined Southend United on a permanent basis from the beginning of the 2020-2021 season, with the option of a new year.

Jacob Mellis was meant to be on the big stage but he's now homeless at 32 years old

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 5, 2023
BY HARRY SLAVIN - BY HARRY SLAVIN – a BY HARRY SLAVIN – XCLUSIVE INTERVIEW — Jacob Mellis, who was playing in the Champions League and making £8,000 a week, was at the top of his teenage career. He is homeless today. He has no house, no car, and no income. He has depended on the generosity of family and friends who have offered couches to crash on or spotting the money for a hotel room over the past 18 months. Mellis has fallen into the worst of holes due to his premature retirement from playing. Last year, a misdiagnosed knee injury was picked up in Southend, bringing an end to a 13-year career that began at Stamford Bridge, where he made his debut in the Champions League against Slovakian outfit MSK Zilina.
