In 2009, Evancho first caught record producer David Foster's attention. She was chosen for the regional semifinals of his "Hitman Talent Search Contest" in September 2009, finishing as runner-up, and she appeared in the "David Foster & Friends" concert at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, in October 2009.

Evancho's debut album, Prelude to a Dream, was released in November 2009 by the artist. The album contained mainly covers of classical crossover hits like "Con te partir," "The Offering," "To Where You Are," "Concrete Angel," and "Amazing Grace." It debuted on the Billboard 200 at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. 121, and No. 10 are the best in the world at this moment. After Evancho's first appearance on America's Got Talent, there are 2 on the Billboard Classical Albums chart in August 2010. Evancho's parents relaunched the album later this month, blaming Evancho's vocal development since its debut.

Evancho was accepted as a contestant on NBC's America's Got Talent (AGT) in its fifth season by placing first in the 2010 YouTube competition after two previous unsuccessful auditions for the show. The View, The Talk, and The Tonight Show were among Evancho's television appearances to promote the album. In December 2011, she appeared in Buffalo, New York; Atlantic City, New Jersey; and Pittsburgh. Billboard ranked Heavenly Christmas as the No. 1 on the 2011 year-end charts. "The Summer Knows" from Summer of 42, starring Chris Botti, trumpet, and "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge! The album received three stars out of five by an Allmusic review.

Jackie Evancho of the PBS Great Performances special on 2012 has virtually identical selections as the album. In August 2012, Evancho joined the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra on a 42-stop tour to promote the album. Concerts were held in two dozen North American cities from June 2013 to June 2013. Evancho launched the album in November 2014 and continued into 2016, including a third PBS special. The album includes classical works such as Rachmaninoff's "Vocalise" and the art song "Dormi Jesu"; classical crossover covers of more recent works such as Lara Fabian's "With or Without You" and "Memories"; and several original songs. Six bonus holiday songs were included in Walmart's deluxe edition. "The Rains of Castamere" from Game of Thrones, "Think of Me" from The Phantom of the Opera, Ennio Morricone's "Your Love" and the Vavilov version of "Ave Maria" are among Evancho's recorded songs from the collection.

During the show's ninth season, Evancho performed the album in a return to America's Got Talent as a guest artist at Radio City Music Hall. She appeared on NBC's Today Show, The Queen Latifah Exhibition, The Oprah Winfrey Network, and the Dr. Phil show. The album features nine previously released tracks, including collaborations with Plácido Domingo, Peter Hollens, and Vittorio Grigolo, as well as three new tracks: "Someday at Christmas" by Stevie Wonder and two versions of "The Little Drummer Boy," one with Il Volo. Dina Fanai and Heather Holley produced the new songs. Robert Kinkel, formerly of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, has arranged arrangements. The album reached its high point at No. 10. No. 93 on Billboard 200, No. 93. The Billboard Classical Albums chart ranks 1 (Evancho's sixth straight debut to do so) and No. 3 on the Billboard Holiday Albums chart. It was the No. 1 on the charts. This year, the best-selling classical album of 2016. The Gazette's review called the album "a shimmering showcase for [Evancho's] wide range and passions. [The] duets in this project showcase her harmonies as well as tender melodies."

Evancho promoted the album on the Fall 2016 cover of, and in an interview with Inspiring Lives Magazine. She performed on NBC's Today Show, Fox's Good Day Chicago, and the Harry show in her 2016 holiday concerts, as well as the America's Got Talent Holiday Spectacular and the Harry exhibit.

On Sony's Portrait label, she unveiled her seventh full-length album, Two Hearts, on March 31, 2017. It consists of an "album of classical crossover songs" with an EP of [five] pop tunes included, four of which she co-wrote. "Evancho lends Mitchell's music a unique ethereal quality to his music, as well as a strong emotional connection with the lyrics," Jill O'Rourke wrote.

Evancho has appeared at concerts presenting Carousel of Time, as well as some of Evancho's other favorites, starting in September 2022 and continuing in October at City Winery venues in Nashville, Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and Atlanta. At the 2009 memorial service for the victims of United Flight 93 and the 2011 NHL Winter Classic, Evancho sang the American national anthem. She appeared at Nella Fantasia at the Beverly Hills Chefs for Seals event in 2011 to promote the cancellation of the annual Canadian seal hunt and became an ambassador for a Humane Society of the United States initiative that encourages children to help protect animals. Evancho had recorded with Tony Bennett and on David Foster albums by 2011, as well as appearing in Japan with the latter. She returned to Japan in January 2012 to perform in the Bunkamura Orchard Concert Hall reopening program "Musical meets Symphony" and giving her own concert with the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Evancho has claimed that her career was shattered in 2019 as a result of a mental disorder and body dysmorphia that has plagued her since 2005; she also said that during the COVID-19 pandemic, she fractured her back and divorced her parents. In 2020, she appeared on season 3 of The Masked Singer as "Kitty," finishing in fifth place. In December 2021 at Millersville, Pennsylvania, Evancho performed "Home for the Holidays" in a concert named "Home for the Holidays."

Evancho appeared in many musicals, including Little Red Riding Hood, in which she appeared as a young child. She appeared in She's Out of My League, a 2010 film. In the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place's "Back to Max", where her character sang "America the Beautiful" to work outside school detention, she was her first featured television appearance.

Evancho appeared in the 2013 political thriller The Company You Keep. Isabel, Robert Redford's eleven-year-old daughter of a widowed attorney turned fugitive, appeared in the film. Evancho "showed she's more than a singing prodigy with her earnest sweetness," Jon Weisman said.

Evancho appeared in various product advertisements and public service announcements as a model for GUESS Kids in 2012 and for Justice Girls Clothing in 2014.
