Jacqueline "Jackie" Burroughs (2 February 1939 – September 22, 2010) was an English-born Canadian actress.

Early life

Born in Southport, Lancashire (now Merseyside), England, she and her mother Edna, her father Harry, and her younger brother Gary immigrated to Canada on August 26, 1948.

Personal life

Burroughs married Zalman Yanovsky, co-founder (with John Sebastian) of The Lovin' Spoonful, but they parted in 1968; they divorced in 1968. Zoe (a restauranteur and author in Kingston) was their one daughter.

Career

Burroughs first appeared in live theatre at Ontario's renowned Stratford Festival, including appearances as Portia in The Merchant of Venice in 1976. Mrs. Amelia Evans in Anne of Green Gables (1985) and Hetty King in Road to Avonlea (1990), among her film credits include The Dead Zone (1983), The Grey Fox (1982), and a voice-over stint in the legendary animated anthology Heavy Metal (1981).

Jackie Burroughs produced, directed, co-wrote, and starred in A Winter Tan, a film based on Maryse Holder's letters from Mexico, which later earned a Genie Award for best actress in a leading role in the film, and she has won several more Genies and Geminis.

For her role in the television film Dulcima, she was given the 1969 Canadian Film Award for best actress.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television bestowed her the Earl Grey Award in 2001 for her contributions to Canadian cinema and television over the years.

Burroughs received the coveted Lifetime Artistic Achievement award in 2005, Canada's highest distinction in the performing arts.

In 1985's The Care Bears Movie, Burroughs played The Spirit. Nancy Galik, a retired teacher, appeared in The Undergrads (1985) opposite Art Carney, who was also an artist.

In the CBC Television series Road to Avonlea from 1990 to 1996, she was perhaps best known to American audiences for her portrayal of the fictional character Hetty King. The series was based on the work of Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery and was produced by Sullivan Entertainment. Mother Mucca appeared in Armistead Maupin's More Tales of the City and Further Tales of the City. Burroughs appeared in the Willard's 2003 film that Burroughs reprised as a mother.

She appeared in the 2006 film The Sentinel. Cassandra Carver, an elderly blind prophet, appeared in the Smallville season one "Hourglass" as the elderly blind prophetess.
