Career
At Santa Clara High School in Oxnard, California, Mustafa played basketball and ran track. He did not play high school football, but he tried out for a college scholarship at Moorpark College; he became a free safety and later became a wide receiver.
Mustafa, a starting wide receiver for the Arizona State Sun Devils in 1995, had an unspecified "confrontation" with a coach and was suspended his senior year. He appeared in the 1997 Rose Bowl between the then-undefeated Sun Devils (led by Mustafa's buddy Jake Plummer) and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Despite the fact that Mustafa was supposed to be a high school coach after graduation, a sports agent recommended that he try out for NFL teams. In 1998, the Tennessee Oilers signed him to the practice squad and then sent him to the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe. Mustafa spent time with the Oakland Browns and Cleveland Browns' training squads in 1999 and 2000.
Mustafa began acting after the Seahawks, appearing in a few television series, including Ugly Betty and Days of Our Lives.
In 2010, he signed a talent contract with NBC and appeared as a supporting cast member in the comedy film Horrible Bosses. Both 2010 and 2011, Mustafa hosted the TBS special Funniest Commercials of the Year. Mustafa appeared in two episodes of ABC's action drama series Charlie's Angels in 2011, portraying Detective Ray Goodson, an ex-boyfriend of one of the Angels. In two episodes of The CW's spy drama series Nikita, he appeared as Cyrus, a former agent for Division and a fan of "Dirty Thirty" during the following year.
Mustafa appeared in a commercial for Israeli beer Maccabee in April 2013. Danny, the police officer's name, appeared in the pilot episode of the USA Network comedy series Sirens the year before. Mustafa would play werewolf Luke Garroway on the Freeform fantasy series Shadowhunters, based on Cassandra Clare's book The Mortal Instruments series of novels.
In It Chapter Two, the sequel to the 2017 horror film It, Mustafa played the adult Mike Hanlon (Chosen Jacobs in his younger version).
He came to prominence in February 2010 for his key role in Old Spice's hit "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" advertising campaign, which also included his monologues. Tom Kuntz directed Mustafa's first commercial in the series. Mustafa portrayed the character from the original Old Spice commercial in a three-day session, resulting in a series of amusing, personal YouTube videos. These were directed at members of the public and celebrities who had asked him questions on sites like reddit, Facebook, and Twitter.
Old Spice unveiled a new YouTube commercial on July 26, 2011, starring Mustafa and Fabio's Mano a Mano. Despite Fabio's being "the epitome of the sex symbol as a pitchman," Mustafa said he wasn't concerned. Mustafa was eventually crowned the champion. He revived his Old Spice career with the help of a number of advertisements that were not released in January 2014. Several websites selling fake products targeted at males were debating the campaign, with Mustafa suggesting that men buy Old Spice instead. Mustafa appeared in Old Spice commercials for the second time in August 2015, this time with Terry Crews.
