High school career

Crowell attended George Washington Carver High School in Columbus, Georgia, where he competed football and ran track. He passed for 4,872 yards on 429 attempts for the Tigers football team during his high school career. Scout.com named him as the best running back recruiter by Scout.com and fourth-best by Rivals.com.

Crowell, a standout track & field star in addition to football, was a standout track & field star. He served in the Army for four years as a sprinter and long distance runner. At the 2009 MCSD Meet, he won the 100-meter dash, completing a new record of 10.91 seconds. He set career highs in the 200m, 52.53 in the 400m, and 12:36.84 in the 3200m.

College career

Washaun Ealey's move to Jacksonville State in the spring resulted in a vacancy at the University of Georgia for the 2011 season. Caleb King, the team's second string running back, was expected to take over as the team's return to action was announced on July 8. During football practices in August and leading up to Georgia's opening game against Boise State on September 3, the position was wide open. For the Bulldogs' September 17 game against Coastal Carolina, he earned the starting running back job. However, it was his fine play against South Carolina on September 10 that gave Crowell's chance to play as a tailback after losing two touchdowns and two passes for 40 yards against the Gamecocks in a 45–42 heartbreaking loss to Coach Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks. Crowell had 16 rushes for 86 yards against Coastal Carolina and highlighted his game with a 27-yard touchdown run to start the game as Georgia marched on to defeat the Chanticleers 59–0. In addition,, he had a 12-yard reception in the competition.

Georgia Bulldogs, which placed Georgia in the SEC East after starting off 0–2 and earning their first-place finish, led to the SEC East's first-place finish, placing Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on December 3. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 10 in the AP College Football Poll, with Georgia ranked 10th overall. In the United States, there are 12 in the country.

Crowell had some breakout performances, such as his 30 carries, 147 yard outing against Ole Miss on September 24 in Oxford, Mississippi, as Georgia defeated Georgia 27–13. Georgia defeated the MSU Bulldogs 24–10. Crowell continued with 104 yards against Mississippi State on October 1 as Georgia defeated the MSU Bulldogs 24-10. He appeared to have scored on a 49-yard touchdown run in the game, but the play was cut short to just 14 yards after the line judge announced that Crowell's shoe had just touched the sideline — it seemed to be very close, according to a video replay. Crowell put out a stout Tennessee defense on October 8, but was limited to 19 rushes for 58 yards and two receptions for five yards. Georgia defeated Tennessee 20–12.

Crowell helped Georgia win by a narrow margin over SEC East rival Florida 24-20 on October 29, when the true freshman ran with the football 18 times for 81 yards. Crowell had another great show against Auburn on November 12, this time for 132 yards and a touchdown, as Georgia defeated Georgia convincingly by a score of 45–7. He also had a pass against the Tigers for a single yard.

Crowell slowed down near the end of the regular season after suffering a high ankle sprain against Kentucky on November 19 as the running back finished with two rushes for 11 yards. Georgia defeated the Wildcats 19–10. Crowell had to miss the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech on November 26 due to the injury.

Georgia defeated top LSU (12–0) in the SEC Championship Game on December 3, where Crowell and the Bulldogs would advance to take the lead and go into the locker room at halftime, up 10–7. With ten rushes for 15 yards and a catch for negative three yards, Crowell struggled to get on track against the tough Tiger defense. The Tigers defeated the Tigers 42–10. LV, led by defensive back-punt returner Tyrann Mathieu, exploded in the second half as the Tigers took the game, 42–10.

Crowell finished the season with 185 passes for 850 yards and five touchdowns. In 12 games, he had eight receptions for 59 yards and a touchdown. Crowell was named freshman of the year by The Associated Press on December 5th. The Georgia Bulldogs were invited to compete in the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Florida, on January 2 against #2 Michigan State (10–3). Georgia lost the game by 33-30 minutes in the third overtime tournament and dropped to a 10-4 record.

Crowell was arrested on June 29, 2012, for being in possession of a weapon in a school zone, unlawful ownership of a weapon, and carrying a concealed weapon. Crowell was suspended from the University of Georgia football team due to his detention and his regular discipline issues, including failing a drug test.

In July 2012, Crowell began attending Alabama State University.

Crowell played well during the 2012 season, winning 127 yards against Alcorn State on September 29. He had several good games for Alabama State, including the breakout performance on September 29. He spent the 2012 season as the Hornets' top rusher, while still assisting Alabama State in a 7–4 record.

Crowell was a leader in Alabama State's 8–4 record, good for third place in the SWAC East Division during the 2013 season. He finished the year with 1,121 yards passing and 15 touchdowns. He played for 179 yards against Jackson State, where he rushed 18 times for 179 yards (averaging 9.9 yards per pass) and a touchdown. However, Alabama State lost by a score of 30–23 to the Jackson State Tigers. In the 2013 season, Crowell had five 100-yard rush games. Crowell declared for the 2014 NFL Draft following the 2013 season. In the 2013 Walter Payton Award Voting, he came in 20th.

Professional career

Despite being destined to be selected in the fourth round, Crowell did not get drafted. He signed as an undrafted free agent with the Cleveland Browns on May 10, 2014, receiving a $10,000 signing bonus as a rookie.

Crowell carried backfield with Terrance West and Ben Tate as a rookie. In a 30–27 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Crowell made his NFL debut in Week 1, running for 32 yards on five attempts and two touchdowns. Crowell's third touchdown of the season against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3. Terrence West, a rookie running back, for the first time since 1979, when Dino Hall and Pat Moriarty achieved the feat. Crowell carried for 77 yards on 11 runs and a touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 12, 2014. Crowell appeared in all 16 games and started four. He finished his rookie season with 607 passing yards on 148 attempts and eight touchdowns for 87 yards. Crowell ranks fifth in rushing yards, only one of nine rookies to break 500 yards, and one of five others to break 600 yards, only one of nine rookies to break 600 yards. Crowell ranked second in rushing touchdowns among rookies, only behind Cincinnati Bengals running back Jeremy Hill.

Crowell and Duke Johnson were responsible for the bulk of the Browns' backfield carry in 2015. Crowell's offense against the San Diego Chargers in Week 4 was for 63 yards on 12 passes, with a 32-yard touchdown. Crowell finished with 62 receiving yards, with one of those intercepting a career-long 53 yards. Duke Johnson added 125 yards and running back yards as well, marking the first time the Browns had two running backs total yards in the game since 2004 (Lee Suggs with 119 yards and William Green with 115). Crowell's first touchdown reception of his career against the Baltimore Ravens was on Week 5. Against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 14, Crowell went for 145 yards on 20 tackles and two touchdowns. Crowell ran for 50 yards in the case. Crowell finished the 2015 season with 706 rushing yards on 185 runs for four touchdowns, averaging 3.8 yards per carry. He appeared in all 16 games of the season and was the starting running back in nine of those games.

Crowell led the Browns in rushing attempts, rushing yards, and rushing touchdowns in the 2016 season. Crowell completed a career-long 85-yard touchdown against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 2. The game was the second-longest running game in franchise history, behind Bobby Mitchell's 90-yard run in 1959. He finished the game with 133 yards on 18 runs and a touchdown, average 7.4 yards per carry. Against the Washington Redskins in Week 4, Crowell went for 112 yards on 16 attempts and a touchdown. Crowell's 386 yards were the most by a Brown in the first four games of a season since Jim Brown recorded 476 yards in 1965. In Week 14 against the Cincinnati Bengals, he had 113 passing yards. In a 27–24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, he had a season-high 152 rushing yards to close out the regular season. Crowell finished the 2016 season with a career-best 952 rushing yards and 319 receiving yards. In the 2016 season, his 4.8 yards per carry ranked 15th among NFL running backs.

The Browns made a second-round pick on Crowell on February 28, 2017, keeping him in Cleveland through 2017. In 2017, Crowell accounted for the majority of the backfield carries.

In Week 8, Crowell had 118 scrimmage yards against the Minnesota Vikings, resulting in a 33–16 loss. He finished with a season-high 121 rushing yards in Week 14 in an overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers. In the 2017 season, he had 853 passing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 28 tackles, and 182 receiving yards, marking the Browns' second consecutive season.

Crowell announced on March 14, 2018, with the New York Jets, a three-year contract worth $12 million.

Crowell finished with 102 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns, one of which was a 62-yard run, as the Jets defeated the Detroit Lions in Week 1 on Monday Night Football, defeating the Detroit Lions 48-17. In Week 3, Crowell returned to Cleveland for a Thursday Night Football game. In the loss to the Cleveland Browns, he had 16 passes for 34 yards and two rushing touchdowns. After being thrown out of defecation, he used the football to simulate defecation, then hurled the ball into the stands, resulting in an unsportsmanlike conduct foul. The gesture occurred at Lambeau Field during an NFC Divisional Playoff game in early 2005, with NFL Network covering the game nationally and Joe Buck on the phone. On television, Buck called Moss' act "disgusting," but Crowell's commemoration was more reserved for his son's. Crowell finished with 219 passing yards, including a 77-yard touchdown run, as the Jets defeated the Denver Broncos in Week 5 -- 34-16. His 219 rushing yards tied for a new Jets franchise record. For his work, Crowell was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. He was put on the injured reserve on December 14, 2018 after suffering with a toe injury against the Buffalo Bills. He had 685 passes for 685 yards and six rushing touchdowns, as well as 21 touchdowns for 152 yards.

The Jets cut Crowell on March 14, 2019 after the Jets signed Le'Veon Bell in a free agency.

Crowell and the Oakland Raiders announced on March 28, 2019, a one-year deal. During a team workout on April 29, he sustained a severed Achilles. On May 3, 2019, he was put on injured reserve, bringing an end to his season and career.
