Iona Brown Career

Career

Brown played violin in the Philharmonia Orchestra from 1963 to 1966. She joined the Academy of St Martin in the Fields in 1964 and climbed through the ranks to become the first female violinist and director in 1974. She left the academy in 1980, but continued to work with them for the remainder of her life.

She was appointed artistic director of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra in 1981. The Queen Olav V of Norway later received the Knight of First Class Order of Merit for her NCO achievements. She supervised the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra from 1987 to 1992. She was dismissed as conductor because of her inability to commit more than six weeks a season with the orchestra due to her other duties, which she protested. Following a change in the orchestra's leadership, Brown resigned as the orchestra's principal conductor from 1995 to 1997. She was guest director of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1985 to 1989. She shifted her attention away from violin to conducting as her health improved and arthritis progressed, finally ending her violin career in 1998. She was the chief conductor of Denmark's South Jutland Symphony Orchestra in her last years.

Brown's main residence in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire, lasted from 1968 to 2004. When she appeared on BBC Radio 4's programme Kaleidoscope, she described how difficult it was to perform her signature piece The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams, she said that the singing of larks she heard on long walks in nearby Marleycombe Down inspired the way she performed it.
