Early and personal life
Alexander was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to an American father and a Vietnamese mother. Their family has often migrated and has lived in Hawaii, Japan, and Washington, DC, DC, due to their father's service with the Department of Defense. They were involved in community theater and chorus in elementary school. They attracted worldwide notice because of their photographic reaction to a transphobic occurrence perpetrated by four UCLA college students.
Although they were raised in a Mormon family, they are not a member of the Mormon Church of Wales and "consider [themself] to be agnostic." They came out as transgender in 2014; their pronouns are ideally they/hem as a result of accepting the alternative he/him; they are non-binary and pansexual.
Career
Alexander's debut acting role was on Netflix's The OA, where they played Buck Vu. Buck, like Alexander, is also a Vietnamese-American transgender youth, and he was partially based on Alexander's real experiences. They were chosen from an open casting call that soared across Tumblr. They were later cast in Every Day, a David Levithan book based on the story of Vic, a trans teen for whom the spirit "A" inhabits for a day. Alexander was cast for The Last of Us Part II, the sequel to their famous video game, in October 2017. In the game, they played Lev, a transgender character.
Queerty named them one of their Pride50 in June 2019, marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, sparking the modern LGBTQ rights movement, "trailblazing individuals who actively ensure that society continues to progress toward equality, recognition, and respect for all queer people." Alexander was one of the front pages of the 2019 Pride magazine, "spotlighting three rising queer artists whose careers and lives are breaking new ground for LGBTQ+ visibility." Alexander will appear in the independent film Daughter in March 2020.
Alexander had joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery in September 2020; they played the first transgender character portrayed by a transgender actor in the Star Trek canon.
