Ian Alexander Life

Ian Alexander (born April 20, 2001) is an American actor known for his role as Buck Vu on The OA.

Early and personal life

Alexander was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to an American father and a Vietnamese mother. Their family has often migrated and has lived in Hawaii, Japan, and Washington, DC, DC, due to their father's service with the Department of Defense. They were involved in community theater and chorus in elementary school. They attracted worldwide notice because of their photographic reaction to a transphobic occurrence perpetrated by four UCLA college students.

Although they were raised in a Mormon family, they are not a member of the Mormon Church of Wales and "consider [themself] to be agnostic." They came out as transgender in 2014; their pronouns are ideally they/hem as a result of accepting the alternative he/him; they are non-binary and pansexual.

Alexander's debut acting role was on Netflix's The OA, where they played Buck Vu. Buck, like Alexander, is also a Vietnamese-American transgender youth, and he was partially based on Alexander's real experiences. They were chosen from an open casting call that soared across Tumblr. They were later cast in Every Day, a David Levithan book based on the story of Vic, a trans teen for whom the spirit "A" inhabits for a day. Alexander was cast for The Last of Us Part II, the sequel to their famous video game, in October 2017. In the game, they played Lev, a transgender character.

Queerty named them one of their Pride50 in June 2019, marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, sparking the modern LGBTQ rights movement, "trailblazing individuals who actively ensure that society continues to progress toward equality, recognition, and respect for all queer people." Alexander was one of the front pages of the 2019 Pride magazine, "spotlighting three rising queer artists whose careers and lives are breaking new ground for LGBTQ+ visibility." Alexander will appear in the independent film Daughter in March 2020.

Alexander had joined the cast of Star Trek: Discovery in September 2020; they played the first transgender character portrayed by a transgender actor in the Star Trek canon.

Football legend opens up on devastating health battle that has left him with just 'two to six years' to live in bid to raise awareness for brutal condition

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 13, 2024
Alexander, 61, was found to have chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a condition believed to be caused by repeated head injuries, in May after undergoing scans and has since suffered from a sharp decline in his health. He has been placed on a soft-food diet due to the risk of him swallowing his tongue and anxiety attacks have prevented him from attending his former club's matches. An email from the Bristol Rovers Former Players Association in January led Alexander to put himself forward for medical checks and his wife, Janet, now hopes a dementia diagnosis from the NHS will follow, opening up greater access to medication. Alexander is often unable to sleep due to chronic headaches and tremors but, at present, his treatment is limited to standard painkillers.

Following her son Ian Alexander Jr.'s death by suicide at the age of 26, Regina King says her 'faith has been questioned.'

Regina King expressed her sorrow after her son Ian Alexander Jr.'s suicide by suicide at the age of 26 in January 2022. The Oscar winner, 53, reflected on the death of her only child and how she continues to influence her personal and professional choices while gracing the front page of Harper's Bazaar's April 2024 issue. I feel like I am in a situation now where my faith has really been tested,' the If Beale Street Could Talk star said. I don't know that I should say this because I feel like it's where I should be, but the suggestion that what you put into it is what makes you get back--it's not always true.' Despite her bout with depression, the actress went on to say that her late son was 'pure joy and pure light.'
