Peter Hugh Dennis (born 13 February 1962) is an English comedian, writer, illustrator, and voice-over artist best known for his role in Punt and Dennis with comedy partner Steve Punt, as well as playing Pete Brockman, the father in the BBC One sitcom Outnumbered. Dennis has been a regular panelist on BBC Two's satirical comedy programme Mock the Week since 2005.
Dennis has appeared on Toby's sitcom Not Going Out since October 2014.

Early life
Dennis was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire, the younger son of school teacher Dorothy Mary (Hinnels) and John Dennis, an Anglican vicar. He brother, who also identified John, served as the British Ambassador to Angola from 2014 to 2018. He grew up in Mill Hill, North London, after his father was appointed as the vicar of John Keble Church, Mill Hill, shortly after his birth. His father lived in Knaresborough and later became Bishop Edmundsbury and Ipswich.
Dennis was educated at a London University College School for the Performing Arts. He played rugby with Will Self and was head boy in his final year while at UCS.
Dennis went on to read for the Geographic Tripos as an exhibiter at St John's College, Cambridge, later this year. "The Spatial Distribution of Elementary Education in 19th-century Wakefield" was his thesis. He also joined the Footlights, where he first encountered Steve Punt and club president Nick Hancock, and the trio worked on a variety of projects beyond the annual review.
Dennis said in a 2016 interview with ITV's This Morning program, he was contacted by Britain's domestic intelligence service, MI5, although he wasn't at Cambridge University and attended a preliminary interview; however, he later learned that the job would require him to "do people over."
Dennis Grayson, who graduated with a first (his nickname was "Desk"), spent six years in Unilever's marketing team while also appearing with Punt at venues including The Comedy Store in London at weekends. Dennis became a brand manager of Lynx deodorant while working at Unilever. His time at Unilever came to an end when he and Punt's BBC Radio 1 show (alongside David Baddiel & Rob Newman) "The Mary Whitehouse Experience" was ordered for BBC Two. Dennis was put on sabbatical by Unilever, as rehearsals for the production were set a weekday, but the company's director later decided to pursue comedy full-time as a result of the show's popularity.
Dennis uses Hugh as his stage name because the actor Peter Dennis was already a member of Equity, the performing arts union.
Personal life
Dennis is from London. He has been married twice: to Miranda Carroll (1987-1993), and Catherine "Kate" Abbot-Anderson (1996-2015), with whom he has a son and a daughter. Dennis was discovered in June 2018 that he was in a relationship with actress Claire Skinner, who appeared opposite him in the sitcom Outnumbered.
Dennis received an Honorary Fellowship from the University of Northampton in July 2008.
Dennis took part in the 2007 L'Étape du Tour, cycling an open stage of the Tour de France for amateurs, which was held in the mountains two weeks before the main event. He finished the job in 11 hours and 7 minutes. "I was an hour before the broom, the bike that gathers the slower riders and disqualifies them," he said. Dennis completed the Great South Run in Portsmouth for the Alzheimer's Society in October 2011.
Dennis was the star of the BBC One show Who Do You Think You Are? (broadcast on September 12, 2012), in which he finds out more about his two grandfathers and their families. His paternal grandfather, Dennis' grandfather, served as an officer during World War II and was coincidentally trained at Dennis' alma mater St John's College.

Radio and television career
Dennis, an impressionist, appeared on Spitting Image and appeared with Punt as resident support comics on two television shows hosted by Jasper Carrott, as an impressionist. Dennis has appeared twice as a contestant on the topical panel show Have I Got News for You, including one against former schoolmate Self.
Punt and Dennis' radio appearances span more than a decade, It's Been a Bad Week, The Party Line, and the satirical radio comedy program The Now Show are two of Punt and Dennis' performances. Dennis was on The Now Show as part of a group that included Punt, Mitch Benn, Laura Shavin, Jon Holmes, and Marcus Brigstocke. He is a friend of Chris Morris and has appeared on Brass Eye as well as doing the narration for CBBC show Sam and Mark's Guide to Avoiding Disaster.
Dennis joined Oz Clarke in presenting the 60-minute Christmas special Oz and Hugh Drink to the Christmas broadcast on BBC Two in December 2009. The pair appeared in December 2010 as Oz and Hugh Raise the Bar, a four-part series that puts them in a competition to create a bar mainly focusing on local British food and drinks.
Dennis has appeared in several sitcoms, including My Hero, in which he appeared in obnoxious GP Piers Crispin. He appeared in Outnumbered, a semi-improvised sitcom based on family life, from 2007 to 2014, and was nominated for a BAFTA award in the comedy category for the 2009 Christmas special.
