Huang Zitao (born May 2, 1993), also known as Tao, is a Chinese singer-songwriter, rapper, actor, and model.

After leaving the Exo boys from South Korea, he made his solo debut in China in 2015 with the mini-album TAO, which was released under the new stage name Z.Tao.

Huang made his acting debut in the romantic film You Are My Sunshine and was praised later for his leading roles in Negotiator and The Brightest Star in the Sky. Huang ranked 25th on Forbes' list in 2017 and 34th in 2019, and 2017 ranked 25th on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list.

Huang Zitao was born in Qingdao, Shandong, on May 2, 1993. He began Wushu training as an infant and became a student athlete. He was scouted by a SM Entertainment representative at a talent show in late 2010.

Music career

Huang was officially introduced as Exo's third member on December 27, 2011 (with the stage name Tao).

Huang was shooting for MBC's celebrity diving show Splash! in late 2013, but he was forced to cancel due to injuries to several other contestants.

He appeared on two songs from Zhou Mi's album Rewind, which he wrote the rap lyrics to; and he appeared as a cast member of the SBS reality television show Laws of the Jungle in 2014. During filming and other planned commitments, he left early due to a foot injury on a coral reef.

Huang founded z.TAO Studio, a Chinese company, in June 2015. He filed a lawsuit against SM Entertainment on August 24 to end his employment. Huang argued that the 10-year deal had unfair terms and that he owed to long-term commitment. However, the Supreme Court dismissed Huang's appeal on March 15, 2018. Before his employment ended in 2022, SM Entertainment and Huang were considered inactive.

SM Entertainment filed a lawsuit against Huang regarding his solo activities in China. Huang was allowed to use his name and image for solo purposes in China, according to Chinese courts, who dismissed the complaint.

Huang made his solo debut on July 23, 2015 with TAO, a digital EP that sold 670,000 digital copies in its first week. The album was accompanied by Z.TAO, the album's second EP, which was available for free on August 19 with the title track "Crown." The music video for "Crown" was released in the style of a 7-minute short film directed by Nick Lentz and starring Jessica Gomes. For the action scenes in the music video, Huang did the stunts and martial arts sequences. On August 23, Huang held his first solo concert Z.TAO Mini Concert at the Beijing Exhibition Center Theater as part of a charity benefit concert for those affected by the Tianjin explosions.

Huang introduced "Reluctantly," a ballad made by himself and Andros Rodriguez, on October 15. Huang received the "Best Stage Performance" award at the 2015 Migu Music Awards and appeared on the single. Huang created and released the single "I'm the Sovereign" as part of an affiliate agreement with the game I'm the Sovereign. For the week of December 5, 2015, the song topped China's Billboard charts.

Huang received the "Most Influential Male Singer" award at the 2016 Mobile Video Festival on January 12, 2016. (Miopai Awards). He was later invited to appear as a headliner on the SoYoung Live Concert Tour in China, which featured young rising musicians.

In March 2016, Huang's first album The Road was released. It was recorded partially in Los Angeles with Nick Lentz as part of his project. On April 22, the lead single "The Road" was announced. Huang began a concert tour Z.Tao The Road Concert in Nanjing on May 1 and premiered a music video for the album's single "Hello, Hello" starring Wiz Khalifa. The platinum award was given to another single, "Adore" from the same month and has sold over 30,000 copies. The Road was limited edition, which was sold in 8888 pieces on August 22. The album's sales increased to 500k rmb after just one minute of pre-sale opening, and the album debuted at number one on the sale charts. Huang received the Most Influential Male Singer award at the Tencent Star Awards at the end of 2016.

Huang was named Ambassador for the 17th Top Chinese Music Awards in April 2017, where he also received the "All-Round Artist" award in April 2017. He started the Z.Tao Promise Concert Tour, his first Asia tour, on April 30, and later unveiled a single of the same name.

Huang participated in Street Dance of China, a dance-oriented variety show. Huang was also revealed that he would be the head designer and MC on the Chinese version of Produce 101. Huang embarked on his fourth concert tour, Z.Tao 2018 IS GODD Concert Tour.

Acting career

Huang made his film debut in You Are My Sunshine with Huang Xiaoming and Yang Mi. On May 1, 2015, the film was released.

Huang appeared in the action comedy Railroad Tigers directed by Ding Sheng, as well as Jackie Chan.

Huang appeared in The Game Changer, directed by Gao Xixi, as well as the romantic thriller Edge of Innocence. He appeared in the web drama A Chinese Odyssey: Love You A Million Years, which was based on the film A Chinese Odyssey. During its run, the series attracted over 5 billion viewers online. He was revealed in November as one of the two leading actors in the action drama Forward Forever alongside Jackson Yi.

Huang appeared in Negotiator, a spin-off of the 2016 hit drama The Interpreter, in 2018. In the Concession's youth drama The Files of Teenagers was released in the same year.

He appeared in the music romance youth drama The Brightest Star in the Sky in 2019.
