Hozier first became involved with the Trinity Orchestra while at Trinity. He appeared on Illuminations' 2014 release "La Chanson de Mardi Gras" as a member of the choral ensemble Anna from 2007 to 2012. He toured and performed with the group internationally, including performances in Norway and the Netherlands. In 2009 and 2010, Hozier appeared at the Oxegen Festival for the first time. He opened up for Alex Winston's appearance in Dublin in 2011. Hozier debuted as a back-up singer for Billy Ocean in 2012.

In 2013, Hozier recorded the song "Take Me to Church" in Dublin, which culminated in him signing with indie label Rubyworks Records. On July 3, Hozier performed his debut extended play, also known as Taking Me to Church. It appeared on Billboard 200. He started recording track demos in his attic studio before embarking on the record with producer Rob Kirwan. In September 2013, the titular single was released. The music video, which was dedicated to homophobia themes, was released the same month, having been produced on a "shoestring budget" and mainly shot in black-and-white. Stephen Fry, an English actor, made the video, which then went viral and then went viral. "Take Me to Church" saw Hozier's ascension to fame, with the album charting top-five positions around the world and receiving multi-platinum awards; the song also received critical acclaim for its lyricism and messaging. With singer Tori Kelly, he performed "Take Me to Church" and The Beatles' "Blackbird" at the service.
