HoYeon Jung Career

Career

Jung started taking modeling lessons at the age of 15, and began modeling as a freelance model in 2010 at age 16, walking in Seoul Fashion Week without an agency for two years. While freelancing, she auditioned for the second season of OnStyle's Next Top Model in Korea, but she did not make it to the top 30 after being voted out of the top 30. In 2012, she signed with ESteem Models. She then went on to compete in Korea's Next Top Model's fourth season in 2013, where she finished as a runner-up after being disqualified in the third episode and returning in the fifth episode. In 2014, Kim Yeon-woo's song "Move" appeared in a music video. She appeared in spreads from Vogue, Elle, and W magazines before joining The Society Management and leaving South Korea in 2016 to pursue a career overseas. She has also joined Elite Model Management and Nomad Management. Jung inadvertently dyed her hair a "good" red color, which became her signature style when moving to New York.

She made her international runway debut in September 2016 at New York Fashion Week after booking to walk as an exclusive for Alexander Wang. She appeared in Harper's Bazaar, Love, and W; and Gap's campaigns were short-lived, as she walked in shows for Marc Jacobs, Alberta Ferretti, Chanel, Max Mara, and Fendi. She made her Paris Fashion Week runway debut in 2016 as an exclusive model for Louis Vuitton at their S/S 2017 show, as selected by Nicolas Ghesquière and casting director Ashley Brokaw. Jung was included on the top 50 models in September 2018. She received the Asian Star Award at the 2019 Asian Model Awards.

Jung has appeared on runways for Burberry, Miu Miu, Jason Wu, Chanel, Schiaparelli, Giambattista Valli, Bottega Veneta, Emilio Pucci, Prabal Gurung, Prabal Gurung, Jerome Pucci, Matthew Matty, Jeremy Scott, Jacquemus, Roberto Cavalli, Tory Burch, Robson, Tory Burch, Jonathan Wilson, Bentley Maxwell, Gucci, Lanvin, Jonathan Kant She has also appeared in advertisements for Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Hermès, and Bottega Veneta, as well as on the covers of Vogue Korea, Vogue Japan, CR Fashion Book, Harper's Bazaar Korea.

In March 2019, Jung appeared in a promotional video for Pharrell and Chanel's joint capsule collection. She was dubbed Louis Vuitton's Global House Ambassador for fashion, watches, and jewelry in October 2021. She collaborated with Adidas Originals in October for their Adicolor campaign. She was on the front page of Vogue's February 2022 issue, making her the magazine's first solo Korean cover star. She became one of N°1 de Chanel's most popular models in 2022. Jung appeared on the "New Supers" list in 2022, dubbed a "supermodel for the modern era."

Jung decided to start acting because of the short life span of model careers, which she felt as her modeling career was diminishing. While modeling in Asia, Jung often returned to South Korea during holidays to take acting lessons, and it took three months of acting lessons in total. She also improved her English to help her learn acting. Jung was signed to Saram Entertainment, a Korean talent agency. Kang Sae-byeok, a North Korean defector and pickpocket who needs money to help her younger brother and locate her mother in North Korea, made her acting debut in the 2021 Netflix K-drama Squid Game in which she played Kang Sae-byeok. While in New York for Fashion Week, she was given three scenes from the show's script and auditioned for the role via video. Hwang Dong-hyuk then asked her to audition in person in South Korea, where she was given the part right away.

She trained for the role of Sae-byeok by practising her character's Hamgyn dialect with real North Korean defectors, watching documentary films about North Korean defectors, and learning martial arts. When modeling overseas to create the character, she also reflected on her own feelings of loneliness, as well as a daily diary from her character's perspective. Sae-byeok became a fan favorite, and critics characterized Jung as the Squid Game's breakout star. Jung received the Screen Actor Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Female Actor in a Drama Series at the 28th Screen Actor Guild Awards for her appearance on the program. With this nomination, she became Asia's second actress as well as Korean descent, earning her individual SAG Award nomination. Her triumph, as well as costar Lee Jung-jae winning the respective male award, made history by the show's first non-English language television series to win at the SAG Awards. She was also nominated for the Screen Actor Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement by an Ensemble in a Drama Series alongside her costars. She began a career with Creative Artists Agency, an American talent firm, in November 2021.

In 2022, Jung appeared in The Weeknd's music film "Out of Time." With the A24 film The Governesses, directed by Joe Talbot, she will make her debut in a feature film. Jung will also be seen in Alfonso Cuarón's thriller series Disclaimer, opposite Cate Blanchett.
