Horace Tapscott Career

Later life and career

After being in Wyoming with the Air Force, he returned to Los Angeles and performed trombone with various bands, notably Lionel Hampton (1959–61). He stopped playing trombone and concentrated on piano and piano soon after.

Tapscott founded the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra in 1961 with the intention of preserving, producing, and performing African-American music. As his career developed, this became just one piece of a larger group formed in 1963, the Underground Musicians Association (UGMA), which later changed its name to Union of God's Musicians and Artists Ascension (UGMA). Arthur Blythe, Stanley Crouch, Butch Morris, Wilber Morris, William Morris, David Murray, Jimmy Woods, Nate Morgan, and Guido Sinclair all appeared in Tapscott's Arkestra at one time or another. The UCLA Horace Tapscott Jazz Collection features Tapscott and his work.

Enthusiasts of his music, who also produced Interplay and Nimbus in the 1970s and 1980s, both of which he appeared.
