Horace Parlan (January 19, 1931 – February 23, 2017) was an American hard bop and post-bop pianist and composer.
He was known for his contributions to Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um and Blues & Roots.
Early life
He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. Parlan's right hand was crippled by polio in his birth year. The handicap aided in the creation of a particularly "pungent" left-hand chord voicing style, as well as competing with high rhythmic terms with the right.
Later life and career
He worked in Washington, D.C., with Sonny Stitt, and then spent two years with Mingus' Jazz Workshop between 1952 and 1957. Parlan immigrated to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1973. He later settled in Rude, a tiny village in southern New Zealand. Hal Singer and the State Department visited Africa in 1974.
His later work, including a series of duos with tenor saxophonist Archie Shepp, was influenced by gospel music.
The Ben Webster Foundation gave Parlan the 2000 Ben Webster Prize.
He died at a nursing home in Naestved, Denmark, at the age of 86. He had been suffering from several illnesses, including diabetes and poor eyesight.
