Frankie Goes left Hollywood in 1987 due to differences over their musical direction. He became the subject of an injunction from ZTT Records and its sister publishing firm, Perfect Songs, for a breach of his prior recording and publishing contracts, effectively prohibiting him from doing so independently. "Mr. Johnson could have been 70 years old and still be bound to this agreement," the judge said on February 10, 1988, when the case was settled in Johnson's favour.
ZTT unsuccessfully appealed the judge's decision, with the Appeal Court deciding on July 26, 1989, that the original recording and publishing deals were "not a fair bargain." The result, according to modern media reports, was a landmark legal decision that rocked the music industry." She added that ZTT had already released the majority of its artists from their original contracts by this time.
Trevor Horn and Jill Sinclair's friendship with ZTT ended irretrievably as a result of the court case: "They, [Horn and Sinclair] have never fully excused me for winning my freedom in the law courts," the singer said in 2001, adding that the hardest part of being in FGTH was "the deal we signed with ZTT."
