Life and career
Henry is the niece of Marc Heinrich, a composer, and Becky Heinrich, an art teacher and graphic artist. She attended public schools in the Minneapolis area and graduated from Hopkins High School. Henry began singing in a sandwich shop job and also posted videos of songs on her YouTube channel, which she started in 2011. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics' "Is Made of This") is her most popular video, with three-part vocal harmonys.
Henry's parents encouraged her to audition for The Voice in a Chicago, Illinois audition in January 2013. During the summer of 2013, Henry went through the open call and subsequent executive auditions, as well as participating in a boot camp. All four chairs were expected to turn in her Blind Audition performance of The Scientist. Before being pulled by NBC, the studio performance appeared on Billboard, and the live broadcast video was in the all-time Top 40 for views of The Voice on YouTube. She competed against Cilla Chan, a singer who sang Torn in the Battle Rounds. Henry and Chan were montaged (their vocal performances were not shown in full) and Henry was given permission to continue. Henry competed against Nic Hawk in the Knockout Round, singing Creep by Radiohead. She was sent home, and The Voice (US) of NBC later lost 15% (1.5 million) viewers after the episode. Henry's fame on YouTube had increased by 10-fold two years after she appeared on The Voice two years ago.
In 2013, Henry released The Immigrant, her first EP. The 5 track EP debuted at #6 on both the US Pop and Rock charts, the same position it held in pre-release. Henry took second place (to Shawn Mendes) in the RyanSeacrest.com top cover competition on April 7, 2014 for her interpretation of the hit song Say Something. Jamison Murphy, the third place finisher, later featured Henry on his single "Remember When." The Grow Music Project unveiled Session Diaries #4, a video on Henry's single "Hide and Seek" by Christopher Tyng-led production that was simultaneously on iTunes on May 6, 2014. The soundtrack for Escapement's closing credits, written and directed by Erik A. Candiani, is "Hide and Seek." Henry collaborated with Candiani on the KARE11 (Minneapolis TV station) promotion for the Sochi Winter Olympics, which were later nominated for two Upper Midwestern Emmy awards, with a prize for best Musical arrangement/Composition. In the Air, Henry's original song In the Air was licensed for the 2016 film Intersection: the Story of Josh Grant.
After her Blind Audition on The Voice, Henry's live performances started right away.
