Maske received the 1989 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Moscow, as well as the silver medal at the 1986 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Reno, Nevada. Maske's most ardent opponents were Cubans, particularly Angel Espinosa, who appeared three times in 1987-1988, losing all three by a 0–5 majority vote, and fortunately for him, he did not see Espinosa in Seoul because Cuba boycotted the 1988 Olympics.
Professional career
Maske was a five-time boxing champion of East Germany during his career. He turned professional and became the IBF world championship holder in the light heavyweight category after reunification in 1990. Between 1993 and 1996, Maske defended his position ten times.
After suffering a split decision failure at Virgil Hill in 1996, he resigned in 1996. In 2007, he defeated him in a rematch.
