Career

Skelton, who had been working in public relations for a brief period of time, has decided to concentrate on journalism. She worked in CFM Radio and appeared on numerous shows at Border Television before becoming a breakfast presenter on BBC Radio Cumbria in 2005, one of the youngest breakfast slot presenters on the BBC network at that time. She was previously a reporter and occasional host on children's news show Newsround and its weekend sports-based version, Sportsround.

Skelton was introduced as a host on Blue Peter on August 28, 2008, replacing Zöe Salmon and becoming the programme's 33rd host. Skelton played an uncredited role in Merlin's BBC film. She announced her exit from the show in August 2013 and was replaced by Radzi Chinyanganya. Skelton worked on other projects during her tenure on Blue Peter, mainly correspondent-based; they included reports from Wimbledon, Wimbledon, and the Championships.

Skelton migrated from Blue Peter to host live FA Women's Super League football matches for the BT Sport channel, as well as keeping her BBC reporter role. She has occasionally appeared on Countryfile since 2008, as well as two series of Holiday Hit Squad with Angela Rippon and Joe Crowley in 2013/14. On the BBC, she appeared on the London Marathon Highlights show in 2014-15. Ore Oduba replaced her in 2016.

Skelton appeared in a Christmas Special Edition of BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing in December 2012. Skelton has co-presented The Instant Gardener, a daytime BBC One show hosted by Danny Clarke since 2015. She appeared on Tonight: Kids Vs. Work in early 2016.

Skelton also hosted coverage of the 2016 European Swimming Championships with Mark Foster and Rebecca Adlington. Rebecca Adlington, Adrian Moorhouse, Andy Jameson, and Mark Foster appeared on the BBC during the 2016 Summer Olympics, presenting swimming coverage. On ITV, Skelton guest hosted five iterations of Lorraine, five more in February 2017. Skelton appeared on More4 in two years as a co-presenter of the 2017 World Aquatics Championships with Adlington and Foster; in the same year, she returned to host the swimming coverage on the BBC.

Skelton appeared in Celebrity Antiques Road Trip (series 8 episode 14) with her friend and ex-co-presenter Rebecca Adlington.

Skelton appeared in the twentieth series of Strictly Come Dancing, alongside professional dancer Gorka Marquez, beginning on September 24th, 2022.

As part of the BBC's 100th Anniversary celebrations, Skelton performed on Saturday, October 22nd, with professional partner Gorka Marquez on 'Strictly Come Dancing' to the Blue Peter theme tune.

Amy Wild: Amazon Summer, Skelton's first book, was published in May 2015.

Skelton appears on BBC Radio 5 Live from 3 p.m. on Sundays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and appears as a temporary co-host on BBC Radio 5 Live Drive Time with Tony Livesey. Skelton will replace Laura Whitmore in presenting BBC Radio 5 Live's new-look morning show on Sunday from 10am to noon on Sunday.
