Early life
Heinrich Harrer was born in Hüttenberg, Austria, in the municipality of Sankt Veit an der Glan in the state of Carinthia, on July 6th. Josef Harrer, his father, was a postal worker. Harrer studied geography and sports at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz, from 1933 to 1938. Harrer joined ATV Graz, a traditional student company.
Harrer was selected to compete in the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1935. The Austrian Alpine skiing team, on the other hand, has postponed the competition due to a rift between the skiing instructors' status as professionals. Harrer did not participate as a result.

Private life
Harrer married Lotte Wegener (1920–1989), the daughter of Alfred Wegener, a German polar researcher and originator of continental drift's theory. When she was ten years old, her father died on a Greenland expedition. Harrer's son Peter Harrer was born in December 1939, three months after Harrer had been internment by British forces in India. Their marriage was annulled in 1943 while the couple was still in India. He married Margaretha Truxa (divorce in 1958), and Katharina (Carina) Haarhaus (1922–2014), who was his wife until his death.
