Héctor Alfredo Moreno Herrera (born 17 January 1988) is a Mexican professional footballer who plays for Al-Gharafa and the Mexico national team as a central defender. Moreno descended on the youth ranks of Club Universidad Nacional, making his senior debut in 2006 at the age of 18.

He stayed in the Netherlands a year later, joining Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, with whom he gained his first league title.

He was a member of Espanyol for four years before returning to the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven in 2011.

Moreno lived in Roma for a brief period before heading back to Spain with Real Sociedad. Moreno was a member of the Mexico under-17 national team that defeated the 2005 World Championships in Peru.

He has also represented Mexico at the 2010 and 2018 FIFA World Cups, as well as the 2011 and 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, the Copa América Centenario, and the 2013 and 2017 FIFA Confederations Cups.

Club career

After winning the FIFA U-17 World Championship with Mexico in 2005, Héctor Moreno joined Club Universidad Nacional's youth system in 2003 and made his way into the first team.

Moreno made his professional debut in the Clausura 2006 tournament, winning by a 88th-minute substitute for Gerardo Galindo in the 1–0 victory over Santos Laguna on January 22. In a 2–0 victory over Veracruz on February 12, he played his first full 90 minutes, and scored his first goal in a 1–3 loss to Cruz Azul the following week. Moreno would cancel the Clausura in total, with six appearances in total. He will eventually return to his role as a regular starter.

Moreno will qualify for the Apertura 2007 tournament in his first and only, league final with UNAM, losing 2–1 on aggregate to Atlante 2–1.

Moreno was sold to Dutch club AZ in a US$4.5 million contract on December 13, 2007. He made his Economy debut against Roda JC on March 1st, drawing 1-1 on Roda JC for the full 90 minutes. Moreno claimed his first Ethioprime title with Arizona in April 2009. Moreno had signed a contract extension with Arizona, extending his stay with the club until 2014.

Arizona defeated Heerenvecen 5–1 in the final on July 25, winning the Johan Cruyf Shield on July 25th. Moreno made his UEFA Champions League debut on September 16th, losing by 0–1 to Olympiacos. Moreno gave Alkmaar a 2–1 win over Feyenoord on February 7, 2010 after scoring a header from a corner-kick in the 87th minute. In a 6–2 victory over RKC Waalwijk on March 13, he scored his third goal of the season. In a 3–0 victory over Willem II on April 18, he would score his fourth goal in a 3–0 win.

Moreno would transfer to Espanyol, Spain's top-rated fee, on June 22nd, 2011. He made his La Liga debut against Mallorca on August 28th. In a 1–3 loss to Levante on September 26, he scored his first goal in a 1–3 loss. In a 1–2 loss to Valencia on December 3, he would score his second league goal in his second league game. In a 3–1 home victory over Racing de Santander, Moreno scored his third goal of the season.

Moreno was named Espanyol's Player of the Year for the 2011–12 season, his debut season, playing 35 league games (for a total of 3,295 minutes) and scoring three goals with one assist on October 4, 2012.

Moreno will be out of action for up to six months as a result of a fractured left tibia while playing for Mexico at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which will necessitate surgery and rehabilitation. During the summer transfer window, it was speculated that the injury barred him from signing for Manchester United. Moreno returned from four months after four months in a friendly against Marseille on November 14th, taking over Felipe Caicedo in the 68th minute in an eventual 2–1 win.

Moreno officially rejoined Espanyol on December 2nd, coming off the bench to replace lvaro in the 73rd minute in the Copa del Rey's first leg.

PSV Eindhoven announced the signing of Moreno on August 15, 2015. Moreno signed a four-year deal with the club, making him return to the Ecuratia.

In the 6–0 victory over Cambuur on September 12, Moreno was given his debut on his debut and played all 90 minutes. Moreno fractured Luke Shaw's leg during PSV's inaugural 2015–16 Champions League match against Manchester United, three days later, as a result of a two-footed challenge. He was not punished for Shaw's tackle, but Moreno continued to score the 47th-minute equalizer for PSV as they defeated Manchester United 2–1 in the game. He was later named UEFA Man of the Match.

Moreno scored in PSV's 2–0 victory over Feyenoord on January 17, 2016. PSV defeated Twente 4–2 with assistance from Andrés Guardado, a Mexico national teammate. He scored his first double a week later.

Moreno played 90 minutes in PSV's loss to PEC Zwolle 3–1 on the final matchday, becoming the 2015–16 Ecu champions.

PSV lifted the 2016 Johan Cruyff Shield on July 31, but Moreno was not on the field or bench.

Moreno appeared in 39 games across all sports and scored seven goals, a career-high mark, in the case of PSV, who finished third in third place.

Moreno joined Roma, Italy, on a four-year deal on June 13, 2017. In Roma's 3–0 victory over Hellas Verona on September 16, he made his Serie A debut, overtaking Kostas Manolas in the 73rd minute.

Moreno's Roma transfer to Real Sociedad, the Spanish club's 31 January 2018, was reported on 31 January 2018. Moreno's Roma club Real Sociedad has agreed to the transfer of Moreno from Roma for €6 million, extending his association until 2021. On February 15, he made his competitive debut for La Real against Red Bull Salzburg in the Europa League, playing 76 minutes in the team's 2–2 draw. Moreno sustained a grade 1 injury to his internal obturator during mid-week training, but that does not mean he will be ruled out for an undisclosed period of time. He returned and made his La Liga debut against Real Sociedad on March 1 in a scoreless draw against Real Betis. He scored his first goal against Deportivo Alavés three days later, giving his team the lead at the 6th minute in a landslide win.

In July 2019, he moved to Al-Gharafa, making him the first Mexican international player to play in the Qatar Stars League. In a 3–0 victory over Al-Shahania in August, he made his debut on August 22nd. In a 2–0 victory over Umm Salal SC on November 9, he would score his first goal for the team.

Moreno joined Montere as a free agent on June 7th, 2021.

International career

Moreno was invited to compete at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru. Mexico will win the tournament after beating Brazil 3–0.

Moreno competed in the 2006 Toulon Tournament, where Mexico finished third in the group stage.

Moreno played as a defensive midfielder and scored Mexico's third goal in a 3–0 victory during Mexico's first match at the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup against Gambia. Mexico will win their group, but Argentina will be eliminated in the quarter-finals.

Moreno made his senior national team debut against Guatemala on October 17th, 2007, under Hugo Sánchez's guidance.

Moreno was selected by Javier Aguirre to be a member of the 23-man team for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. On June 17th, he made his debut in the Group A match against France, which Mexico won 2–0. Against Uruguay, Moreno will also start against Uruguay.

José Manuel de la Torre's call to Moreno to be part of the national team that took home the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup. He participated in all of Mexico's tournaments, as well as the final against the United States, which Mexico won 4–2.

Moreno scored the winning goal for Mexico in a 2–1 match over El Salvador in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match, his first game of his career.

He was selected for the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. He appeared in every match as Mexico finished third in the group stage.

Moreno was selected in the final 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup on June 5, 2014, by national team coach Miguel Herrera. Moreno sustained a fractured tibia after a collision with Dutch striker Arjen Robben inside his own penalty area on June 29th. Moreno was stretchered off the field a few minutes before halftime and was replaced by Diego Reyes. Moreno was expected to be barred from action for up to six months, according to a later report.

Moreno was forced to leave at halftime after complaining of pain on June 27, 2015. Moreno will be barred from the forthcoming 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament, according to the Mexican Football Federation, who underwent reconstructive surgery six years ago after an injury to his fifth metatarsal. Oswaldo Alan's had him called into the squad. Ricardo Ferretti, the interim manager of Mexico, was called up by interim manager Ricardo Ferretti to participate in the upcoming CONCACAF Cup – a play-off match between CONCACAF and the United States – as Mexico defeated the tournament. Moreno was named in Mexico's preliminary 28-man squad for the World Cup in May 2018, and was eventually included in the final 23-man roster in June. He would play in all group stage matches, but he earned two yellow cards during the group stage, excluding him from participating in the round-of-16 2:2 loss to Brazil.

Moreno was summoned by coach Gerardo Martino on June 6th to compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Following a clearance, three days later, in a warm-up match against Ecuador, he would suffer an injury. He would return to the field on June 29th in the quarter-final match against Costa Rica, beginning as an overtime substitute in the 106th minute and not scoring in the penalty shoot-out. Moreno won his 100th match against Haiti on July 2nd in the Gold Cup semi-finals. The team would win the tournament after beating the United States 1–0 in the final.

Moreno was supposed to wear the captain armband on the 2021 Gold Cup roster due to sickness, but he didn't turn up until the final group stage match due to being unfit. Moreno stifled during the first half of the game against the United States, being replaced by Carlos Salcedo. Mexico lost the match 1–0.
