Early life
Hayley Kiyoko Alcroft was born in Los Angeles, California, on April 3, 1991, to figure skater and choreographer Sarah Kawahara, as well as actor and comedian Jamie Alcroft. Kiyoko is a lesbian. She has admitted that she was attracted to girls when she was six years old, and she has spoken out to her parents in the sixth grade. She grew up struggling with those emotions after discovering she loved girls, fearing rejection and judgment if she came out. Kiyoko wanted to instill confidence in young people who are living with the same problems. Kiyoko's music is centered around her experience and emotions she's had when deciding to accept her identity. The "This Side of Paradise" music video explored her struggles with expressing herself, while the "Gravel to Rhythm" music video focuses on her teenage encounters with girls. Career
Kiyoko was invited by former pop star Vitamin C to join an all-girl singing and dancing group in 2007. Allie Gonino, Tinashe, Kelsey Sanders (later replaced by Lauren Hudson) and Marisol Esparza joined the Stunners. The band bonded with Columbia Records and released a single named "Bubblegum" to iTunes along with the official video for the single six months since its inception. They also contributed a remix of "Let's Hear It for the Boy" to the iCarly soundtrack. The group left Columbia Records, signed a production contract with Lions gate Entertainment, and shot a music video for their promo single "We Get It," which was released on February 22, 2010.
