Harry McShane Career

Playing career

McShane, who was born in Holytown, North Lanarkshire, started his football career as an amateur with Bellshill Athletic before going professional with Blackburn Rovers in April 1937. He stayed for Manchester, Blackpool, Reading, and Port Vale during the Second World War.

After the war ended, he continued to Huddersfield Town and made 15 appearances in the First Division in the 1946-47 season, scoring one goal in a 5–2 victory over Derby County on September 11th. He moved to Bolton Wanderers in 1947 after recovering from a broken arm.

Walter Rowley's "Trotters" took home 17th place in 1947–48, 14th place in 1948–49, and 16th place in 1949–50. During his time at Burnden Park, he scored six goals in 93 league games. In September 1950, McShane was sold to Manchester United in exchange for defender John Ball and £5,000. He had been contracted to replace Charlie Mitten, who had left the company. In 1981-51, he scored seven goals in 31 appearances, as the "Red Devils" finished second in the league. In a 3–1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, his first goal at Old Trafford came on October 7, 1950. He played for United on the 1951-52 season, scoring one goal in 12 league games this season. In a 2–1 victory at Maine Road on September 15, his goal was a crucial one, as it came against rivals Manchester City. Matt Busby's side lost eighth place after struggling with a cartilage injury and appearing just five times in the 1952–53 campaign.

McShane struggled to make it to the first squad of the 1953-54 season, and George Hardwick's Oldham Athletic sent him £750 in February 1954. At the end of the 1953–54 season, the "Latics" were promoted out of the Second Division and then finished tenth in the Third Division North, 1954–55. During his time at Boundary Park, McShane scored five goals in 41 league games.

He later played non-league football for Chorley (as a player-coach), Wellington Town, and Droylsden.

David Gaskell was awarded two gold medals by Man United more than 50 years since they were crowned

www.dailymail.co.uk, June 19, 2023
Since the EFL lowered the eligibility from a minimum of 14 appearances to five, Gaskell is one of up to 18 former United States players who may be eligible for missing medals. When Gaskell made his debut against Manchester City in 1956, he was the club's youngest goalkeeper. During 13 years at Old Trafford, he appeared in the 1963 FA Cup final win over Leicester City and had a total of 119 first team appearances.
