Personal life
Khan was born in Bolton, England, to a Pakistani Punjabi family with roots in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
He is the younger brother of former WBA and IBF World Light Welterweight Champion Amir Khan and is the first cousin of English cricketer Sajid Mahmood, who came to England after being released from the Pakistan Army.
Khan played football for his hometown team before the club was eventually terminated. Khan is a fan of Indian Premier League cricket, and he also loves his hometown football team, Bolton Wanderers. Oscar De La Hoya is his all-time favorite boxer.
In 2016, Khan married Arifa Janjua in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Khan and Janjua then travelled back to Bolton, where their Walima took place.
Amateur career
Khan fought in the Bantamweight division, winning 66 victories and 19 losses while watching his older brother dominate the sport as an amateur. Khan has also won the Junior ABA Championships and the Junior Four Nations Challenge twice.
Following a loss to Tanzanian boxer Elias in the third round, the highlight of his Amateur career came as he qualified for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
After being overlooked by the Team GB selectors in favour of Andrew Selby, who went on to triumph in the quarter finals but was then promised a medal before losing out to eventual gold medalist Suranjoy Singh. He was one of two Pakistanis to win a bronze medal for boxing in the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the other being Muhammad Waseem.
Khan was barred by the International Boxing Association (AIBA) from representing Pakistan in the World Amateur Boxing Championships, a qualifier for the 2012 Olympics, because he had travelled for England as a youth, even though he obtained Pakistani citizenship in 2010. His father attempted to appeal the suspension but was unable to have it lifted.
Professional career
Khan debuted at super flyweight and was worked by Oliver Harrison, his older brother Amir Khan's former coach.
