Harold Miner Life

Harold David Miner (born May 5, 1971) is a retired American professional basketball player and two-time champion of the National Basketball Association (NBA) Slam Dunk Contest.

He attended college at the University of Southern California (USC) and was a member of the University of Southern California's men's basketball team.

In 1992, he left school to pursue his academic career and played in the NBA for the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers.

Despite comparisons to Michael Jordan, Miner's NBA career lasted just four years.

Personal life

Miner had resided in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was married with two children as of 2011. He said he had prudently invested the money he earned during his playing career, allowing him to remain a stay-at-home father rather than having to look for work. He had been unable to give interviews or make public appearances over the majority of the time since his basketball retirement, but instead remained private and inaccessible. In 2010, however, he agreed to an interview in which he spoke about his desire to resurface with the University of Southern California and with some of his friends from his playing days.

Miner played in the 2011 Pacific-10 men's basketball tournament, and he announced that he would complete his jersey by March 1, 2012, according to the conference's basketball Hall of Honor. During halftime of the game against UCLA on January 15, 2012, he would later attend the retirement of his jersey by USC.

Harold Miner Career

Professional career

Miner left college after the 1991–92 season and declared himself eligible for the 1992 NBA draft. He was ranked by the Miami Heat as the 12th overall pick.

In 1993 and 1995, Miner won the NBA Slam Dunk Contest twice. Miner defeated Isaiah Rider, who had won the previous year, firmly establishing Miner as one of the game's best dunkers in the 1995 race. Nevertheless, his playing career was unremarkable, and he didn't live up to the high hopes with which it began. Despite his dunking prowess, Miner did not get much playing time from Heat coaches, Kevin Loughery, and Alvin Gentry.

Miner was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1994-95. For the Cavaliers, he averaged only 3.2 points and 7.2 minutes per game. Victor Alexander was traded to the Toronto Raptors on October 18, 1995, but his contract was called off four days later when Alexander failed his physical. Miner's last NBA game, a 26-point loss to the Chicago Bulls on February 20, 1996, was played in five scoreless minutes.

Cleveland dropped Miner after only playing him in 19 games this season. The following year, he tried out for the Toronto Raptors, but was suspended early in the preseason. Miner resigned from basketball, rather than continue to pursue a career in professional basketball, whether in the NBA or elsewhere. He later said that the numerous knee injuries he sustained during his career prompted his decision.
