Early life
Appleman was born in Manhattan, New York. He spent four summers at the French Woods performing arts summer camp and attended Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School. He dropped out to film a role in a film after attending Carnegie Mellon for "a year and a month or two."

Career
Among Appleman's on stage appearances include the revival of Streamers at the Roundabout Theater Company, Clifford Odets' Paradise Lost at the American Repertory Theatre, and Sarah Ruhl's Passion Play as Jesus.
