Haila Maré González (born 28 January 1974), also known as Haila Mompié or simply Haila, is a Cuban musician who specializes in son and timba.
She is best known as the lead singer in Azcar Negra, as a former Bamboleo performer, and for her solo career.
Life and career
Haila was born in Amancio, Las Tunas, Cuba, on January 28th. Her father was a hobbyist and her mother, a stylist, was a stylist. She began her musical training in Santiago, Cuba, where she studied dance. Her family migrated to Havana, which ended her career shortly at age 15. There, she met Yaqueln Castellanos, the son-singer who was adorned of Haila's singing ability. Haila was given a job in the firm Septeto Tradición, which mainly played in the authentic style of the son septetos of the 1920s and 1930s. She appeared in Las Avenidas and then joined Habana Son, a cabaret. She had her first overseas appearance in 1994 in Mexico as a member of Guajira Habanera. She joined Bamboleo as a vocalist in September 1994. She recorded two albums with them and appeared in different countries, building her name as a singer.
Haila formed Azcar Negra, a timba band signed to Bis Music, 1998 together with singer and composer Leonel Limonta. They had great success in Europe and Latin America. The song "Andar Andando" became their most popular hit.
Haila began her solo career in 2000. She appeared on La rumba soy yo, a collection of artists rumba albums that won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2001. In 2002, Semonymous debut album was released, which was followed by a live album. Diferente, produced by David Calzado, Charanga Habanera's leader, was released in 2004. Mala was released in 2011 by Aned Mota, her husband and former vocalist of Charanga Habanera. In 2012, Mala received the Cuba Disco Award in the Latin Music category.
