Harry Jon Benjamin (born May 23, 1966) is an American actor, voice actor, and comedian.

He is known for his appearances in numerous adult animated series, including Sterling Archer in Archer; Bob Belcher in Bob's Burgers; Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist; Satan in Lucy; Coach McGuirk and Jason Penopolis on Home Movies.

Early life

Benjamin was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, on May 23, 1966. He was the son of a Jewish family. Howard's father, Howard, was the CEO of an electric business, and Shirley, his mother, was a former ballet dancer who taught dance at a studio. He graduated from Worcester Academy in 1984 and Connecticut College in 1988.

Personal life

Benjamin was named "Harry" after his paternal grandfather, but his family has always referred to him by his middle name, "Jon"; in his early years, he was unaware of his correct first name. He has claimed that his first appearance in the credits on Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist, was done with his permission by co-star Laura Silverman "just to make fun of me."

Amy Beth Silver, Benjamin's longtime decorator, is also a set decorator. They have a son, Judah, and live in Brooklyn.

Benjamin is an amateur ornithologist.

Benjamin endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in January 2020 and narrated a series of videos relating to Sanders' health-care plans. Benjamin performed an animated version of himself in September 2020 to promote the Gravel Institute's YouTube channel's launch video.

Career

Benjamin's comedy career began in Boston, where he was first in a comedy duo with Sam Seder, then a director of Cross Comedy, a comedy team led by David Cross. Benjamin spent most of his time in groups rather than alone. His post-independence work became more experimental, rejecting traditional approaches of stand-up comedy.

Benjamin's live shows include the Midnight Pajama Jam, a show starring Jon Glaser and Tinkle in New York City, a show that blends stand-up comedy and live music co-hosted by Todd Barry and David Cross. A Midnight Pajama Jam DVD is now available. On the album Invite them Up, Benjamin and Cross appear together.

In its eighty-first episode, "King Dead," where Zorak and Moltar kidnapped him, he was the guest on Space Ghost Coast to Coast. As "Gene Stapleton" and "Rabbi Marc Shalowitz," he has appeared on ESPN Classic's Cheap Seats. In Todd Barry's short film Borrowing Saffron, he co-starred and portrayed a talking can of vegetables with a shameful habit of autofellatio. In Not Another Teen Movie as the football coach and on the FX Network comedy drama Rescue Me as the pimp "F-bomb" in season two, he made brief cameos. He appears in Turbocharge-the Unauthorized Story of the Cars, a comedy biopic about the 1980s rock band The Cars, starring Elliot Roberts in his trademark deadpan comedic performance.

Benjamin has performed extensive voice work in animated television shows. His appearances include roles in several Soup2Nuts cartoon shows, including Science Court, Home Movies, O'Grady, Dr. Katz, Occupational Therapist, and Assy McGee. With David Cross, he co-created the Freak Show. In Lucy, the Daughter of the Devil, which ran for one season on Adult Swim beginning September 9, 2007, Benjamin appeared as the Devil and in several other roles. Benjamin is the announcer of The Sam Seder Show and The Majority Report, and is a recurring character on the PBS Kids' program WordGirl. On Breakroom Live with Maron & Seder, he appeared as "Shelly," Sam Seder's accountant.

Benjamin has appeared in many animated films. In "Broodwich" as Mr. 'D's, he appeared in the Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes "Bus of the Unead" and "The Last One" as Mothmonsterman. In "Bible Fruit" as Mortimer Mango and played Master Shake in "Last Last One Forever and Ever," Capt. Turd Mahoy is a playwright from the Netherlands. With frequent collaborator Jon Glaser, he appeared in the film Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters as a government agent. Carl is a television enthusiast grocery store clerk who portrayed Yoda in the Star Wars parody episode "Something, Something, Somewhere, Dark Side."

The Venture Bros. appears in "Escape to the House of Mummies Part II," "I Know Why the Caged Birds" and "The Good Man," in which he played Dr. Orpheus' master and a future Dean Venture respectively, as well as "The Good Man." On the Season 1 DVD, he appeared in the Stella short "Bar" which can be found as an easter egg. Benjamin appeared on the Comedy Central sketch/variiety show Important Things with Demetri Martin.

Benjamin and David Cross created and wrote for Paid Programming, a live-action pilot for Cartoon Network's late night programming block, Adult Swim. Paid Programming was not intended for a complete series, and Benjamin referred to it as a "absent failure."

Benjamin appeared in a Conan O'Brien Super Bowl XLIII Bud Light commercial and was in charge of the McCain Girls videos on YouTube. In the FX series Archer, he plays Sterling Archer, a shadowy agent who appeared in the first FX series Archer, which first aired on January 14, 2010. He has appeared on numerous episodes of the television series Human Giant, as well as a cameo in the American Dad! As a talking head of cabbage, episode "License to Till" looks like a talking head of cabbage.

Benjamin appeared in the comedy Central film Jon Benjamin Has a Van, which he co-created with comedian Leo Allen. The series premiered on May 14, 2011, and a total of ten episodes aired, the last on August 10, 2011.

Benjamin's voice can be heard as the narrator of a number of television commercials for Coke Zero, including some with tie-ins to ESPN's College Game Day program, beginning in 2013.

By the Vulture TV Awards, a digital extension of New York magazine, Benjamin was voted the year's best male comedy performer for his role on Bob's Burgers and Archer in 2014.

Benjamin released his first jazz album in 2015, Well, I Should Have... Benjamin "played" piano, Stuart Kreitzer on bass, and Jonathan Preitz on drums.

Benjamin wrote a comedic autobiography titled Failure is a Choice. An Attempted Memoir was published by Penguin Random House in May 2018. He also narrated the audiobook.

As the restaurant's new spokesman, Benjamin began appearing in commercials in 2018.

Benjamin was the voice of Saddam Hussein in Blowback, a podcast about the Iraq War that was created and hosted by Brendan James and Noah Kulwin in March 2020.
