Gyles Brandreth Life

Gyles Daubeney Brandreth (born 8 March 1948) is an English writer, broadcaster, actor, and former Member of Parliament.

Early life

Brandreth was born in Wuppertal, West Germany, where his father, Charles Brandreth, was serving as a legal officer with the Allied Control Commission on March 8th. Brandreth and his parents were educated at the Lycée Français in South Kensington and Bedales School in Petersfield, Hampshire, where he met his friend Simon Cadell.

Brandreth studied Modern History and Modern Languages at New College, Oxford, where he encountered Rick Stein. He directed the Oxford University Dramatic Society and was President of the Oxford Union in Michaelmas' tenure (1969), and was a regular contributor to the Oxford University journal Isis. In a contemporaneous publication, he was referred to as "Oxford's Lord High Else." Brandreth "set out to make himself into a Ken Tynan," Christopher Hitchens said. Wore a cloak."

Personal life

At Oxford University, Brandreth met his future wife, Michèle Brown. The couple married at a "quiet wedding" five years ago when they were living off Baker Street, with Brown as a television reporter and Brandreth in theatre. They were married at Marylebone Registry Office on June 8, 1973, with actor Simon Cadell, Brandreth's best friend, as a witness.

Since 1986, Brandreth and his wife have lived in Barnes, south west London. They have three children, including Aphra, a former Richmond Conservative councillor. At the 2019 United Kingdom general election, she was the party's lagging candidate for Kingston and Surbiton. Aphra is deputy chair of the Conservative Women's Organisation.
