Gurpreet Singh Sandhu (born 3 February 1992) is an Indian professional footballer who competes as a goalkeeper for the Indian club Bengaluru and India's national football team.

Sandhu was named captain of India's national team for the friendly match against Puerto Rico on September 3rd; his fifth Indian to play professionally in Europe, succeeding Mohammed Salim, Baichung Bhutia, Sunil Chhetri, and Subrata Pal; the first Indian to play in the UEFA Europa League.

Early life

He was born in Mohali, Punjab, to a Sikh Jatt family. At the age of 9, he began playing football.

Gurpreet is also a fan of former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and Indian International goalkeeper Subrata Pal. He is a graduate of DAV College in Chandigarh.

Club career

Gurpreet started playing football at the age of eight and joined the St Stephen's Academy in 2000. Gurpreet was selected for his state youth team, the Punjab U16s, after his good results at the St Stephen's Academy. He made his youth state level debut in Haldwani in 2006. He remained at St. Stephen's Academy until 2009, when he joined East Bengal as a youth player and spent the remainder of 2009 with the Kolkata-based youth team.

Gurpreet signed a professional deal with East Bengal in 2010 and made five appearances for East Bengal before the 2009–10 season. Gurpreet was loaned out to Pailan Arrows for regular game time, but the Indian Arrows had no caps for the 2010-11 season, as they were named then. He began the 2011–12 season as East Bengal's second choice goalkeeper, but Gurpreet took over as the first choice 'keeper for East Bengal's I-League campaign. In their 0–1 loss to Churchill Brothers in the first game of the 2011-12 I-League season, he started in his first game of the 2011–12 I-League campaign. On March 6, 2012, he made his debut in continental competitions in Asia against Al-Oruba, losing 0–1 and playing his final continental match of the season against Kazma SC. In the 68th minute of the game that ended 0–1 to East Bengal and featured his first match of the season, he played his first match of the season against United Sikkim on November 10, 2012 as a replacement goalkeeper in the 68th minute, a 2–2 draw against Dempo SC on May 4, 2013. Sandhu joined Norwegian club Stab'k on August 15, 2014. He made his senior debut for the club in a friendly match against second-tier side Follo on January 18, 2015, winning by 4–1. After playing in a number of cup games, including Stab's complete 2016 cup run, he made his league debut in late May 2016 in an away match 5–0 victory over IK Start, the first Indian to play in a European top division league.

Sandhu became the first Indian to play in a UEFA Europa League match against Connah's Quay Nomads at Belle Vue, Wales, on June 30, 2016. Sandhu played 30 minutes before being replaced by Sayouba Mandé. Sandhu's first Norwegian Football Cup match was played on May 4, 2016 against Brum SK, the second division team in the Norwegian Football Cup, who lost 0-3 for Stab'k. Sandhu's last league match for Stab'k was against Lillestrm SK on June 3, 2017, when Lillestr'm regained the three points by the end. Sandhu left Stab'k in August 2017 to return to India.

Gurpreet joined Bengaluru from Stabk in August 2017 for an undisclosed transfer amount. He made his Bengaluru debut against April 25 in an AFC Cup knockout stage match, and his league debut was against Mumbai City, keeping the score clean. Sandhu played a vital part in Bengaluru's campaign in the 2017--18 Indian Super League season as they marched to the finals against Chennaiyin FC, which they lost 3–2. Gurpreet had seven clean sheets on hand. Sandhu's contract was extended until May 2023, according to the sandhu family. Sandhu's first match of the 2018-19 Indian Super League season came against the defending champions Chennaiyin FC, who lost 1–0. Gurpreet was the vice captain of Bengaluru in 2021-22 seasons after Dimas left the team at the end of the 2020-21 season, then skipped the team against Maziya, where they defeated 6-2 and then captained the team briefly in ISL as skipper Sunil Chhetri was on the bench again.

International career

Gurpreet made his India U19s debut against the Iraq U19s in the 2010 AFC U-19 Championship qualification, on November 5th.

For the 2011 AFC Asian Cup, he was called up to the 23-man senior Indian squad. He was drawn 1-1 in his first match against Turkmenistan. He was selected to a FIFA World Cup qualifier squad against Nepal in 2018, but he was unused in both legs. Gurpreet appeared in his second game for the senior team against Iran in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Bangalore, starting in a 0–3 loss. In a 2–1 loss on October 8th, he made his next game against Turkmenistan. On November 12, he kept a clean sheet against Guam, a game that ended 1–0. In a 2–0 victory in the SAFF Suzuki Cup 2015, he kept his second clean sheet against Sri Lanka. He captained the Indian national team against Puerto Rico in 2016 and was instrumental in India's 1–0 victory over Kyrgyzstan in a 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualification match.

2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers AFC

In the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, he played for India in his 35th appearance for the team against Oman on September 5, where he conceded 2 goals as India lost the match 1–2.

Gurpreet was given the captain armband in the second group stage match 2022 World Cup Qualifiers, as the skipper Sunil Chettri was forced to miss due to a traumatic injury against Asian Champions, Qatar. As India defeated Qatar 0–0, Gurpreet saved 11 shots on target from the Qatar attack and became a hero for the team.
