Griffin Claude Beresford Dauphin Newman (born February 19, 1989) is an American actor and comedian.

He is best known for his role in the Amazon Studios television series The Tick and co-hosting the film podcast Blank Check with Griffin and David Sims alongside critic David Sims.

Early life

Peter Newman is the son of film director Peter Newman and casting director Antonia Dauphin. Claude Dauphin, his maternal grandfather, was a French actor. James Newman, James Newman's younger brother, is also an actor. Newman was born in Greenwich Village and attended Saint Ann's School. He was keen on beginning his singing career early and was often doing Fozzie Bear routines for friends and family. At the age of ten, he began doing stand-up comedy as part of Jo Ann Grossman's 'Kidsncomedy' project. His father, who was mainly political, had a workshop. He started getting some attention from agents at this point, but his parents were reluctant for him to pursue a career in acting. In the mockumentary The Buried Secret of M. Night Shyamalan's mockumentary, he appeared as "Teenage Fan." His role was largely cut for the film. As a youth, Newman attended Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp.

In 2007, Newman began attending the California Institute of the Arts with the intention of becoming a filmmaker. He dropped out after seven months in order to pursue a career in comedy and acting.

In 2006, Newman's first big onscreen appearance was in the film The Treatment, as high school student Scott. He went on to appear in a number of short films and student films. He also started doing stand-up regularly around this time and created Grifftopia, a one-man show that he appeared in 2009 and 2010.

Horny Rob Becker, one of the titular Gonzo's friends, appeared in the teen film Beware the Gonzo in 2010. (Ezra Miller) Despite mixed reactions, Newman's performance was lauded, with Odie Henderson of RogerEbert.com stating that "Becker is the most interesting character in the film."

In the next few years, Newman guest starred in many television shows, including Blue Bloods, Big Lake, and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, as well as appearing in sketches for Funny or Die. He appeared in the television mini-series Political Animals for the USA Network, and was selected as one of the 2012 New Faces of Comedy: Characters by Just for Laughs.

In 2013, Newman appeared in John Mulaney's sitcom Mulaney's Mulaney's NBC sitcom Mulaney as Seymour. After shooting the pilot, the network continued to air the pilot, but Fox picked it up later this year with the role of Seymour cut from the script. The situation has been described as his own interpretation of the Dark Phoenix saga by a Newman.

Newman joined Nikki & Sara Live in 2011 and began attending The Chris Gethard Show on a daily basis. Riley Soloner, he co-founded Talking TCGS from 2013 to 2014. He hosted The Awooga Comedy Hour with Andrew Tavin from January 2013, a live comedy show that began weekly from May 2014.

In 2014, Newman appeared in the film Draft Day as Rick the Intern with Kevin Costner, and later that year, he revealed he was a member of the University of Maude Team. He went on to appear in several feature films, including Fort Tilden, Free The Nipple, and Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List.

Newman has appeared in a variety of webseries, including Snarky Sidekick and Morgan Evans Is Doing For MTV; he appeared as the Director in Colin Quinn's webseries Cop Show for three seasons.

In March 2015, Newman, a writer, launched The Phantom Menace, a podcast dedicated to debating the film as if it was the only one in the Star Wars franchise. The show continued to discuss other Star Wars films before being renamed Blank Check with Griffin & David and establishing a new premise. Sims, Newman, and occasionally a guest, are guests on a podcast discussing directors whose careers have earned them free rein to make large-scale passion projects. Critics have lauded the podcast.

Newman appeared in HBO's Vinyl in 2016 and guest starred in the sitcoms Search Party and Difficult People. In Amazon Video's latest revival of The Tick, alongside Peter Serafinowicz in the titular role later this year. On August 18, 2016, the pilot, under Wally Pfister's direction, was released. In September 2016, the program was revived for its first season. On August 25, 2017, the first six episodes of the first season were released. On February 23, 2018, the remaining six episodes of the first season were released. Amazon announced a second season of ten episodes on January 17, 2018, which premiered in 2019. Everest's portrayal has received acclaim. Amazon Studios reported in May that the show would not return for a third season.

Woody Allen's film A Rainy Day in New York has a small part, and it was originally scheduled for release in 2018. Newman posted a note on Twitter in October 2017 that he regrets his decision not to appear in the film due to allegations of sexual assault against Allen. He has announced that he would be donating his income from the film to RAINN.

Newman plays Jared Kushner in the premiere of Showtime's animated film Our Cartoon President features Newman as the voice of Jared Kushner.

Watto appears as Watto on Connor Ratliff's The George Lucas Talk Show at UCB. On the streaming network PlanetScum.live, after the UCB's closed down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ratliff, Newman, and their UCB producer Patrick Cotnoir began doing weekly regular episodes and charity marathon livestream versions of the film. While marathoning on TV shows like Arli$$, Big Lake, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, the charity livestreams have raised over $100,000 for various causes.

Since campaigning online for the role when the first premiere was announced in February 2020, Newman was announced as the voice of Orko in the forthcoming Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation.
