Early life
Thomas Griffin Dunne was born in New York City to Ellen Beatriz (née Griffin) and Dominick Dunne. He is Alexander Dunne's older brother. After Dominique's assassination in 1982, his mother founded Justice for Homicide Victims. His father was a writer, editor, and actor. He is also a nephew of writers John Gregory Dunne and Joan Didion. Dunne, a boy born in Los Angeles, Massachusetts, graduated from Fay School in Southborough, Massachusetts, and then moved to Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he discovered an interest in acting and appeared in many school productions. He was supposed to appear in an Othello school production when a teacher discovered him smoking marijuana on the eve of a performance. Dunne was immediately dismissed and returned to New York shortly thereafter to pursue his acting ambitions. He studied acting at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre under Sanford Meisner.

He was married to American actress Carey Lowell from 1989 to 1995, with whom he has one daughter, actress Hannah Dunne.

Career
Dunne began his career as a teenager with a small supporting role in The Other Side of the Mountain in 1975.
