Greg Oden Life

Gregory Wayne Oden Jr. (born January 22, 1988) is an American former professional basketball player.

Oden, a 7 ft (0.13 m) center, played basketball at the Ohio State University for one season, during which the team was the Big Ten Champion and the tournament runner-up in the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship. Greg Oden was first overall in the 2007 NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers on June 28, 2007.

In September 2007, he underwent microfracture surgery of the knee, and as a result, he missed the entire 2007–08 NBA season.

On opening night 2008, he recovered and made his NBA debut.

After a long history of injuries, he was released from the Trail Blazers in March 2012.

He joined the Miami Heat in August 2013, more than three years after last playing in an NBA game and coaching the team through the 2014 NBA Playoffs. Oden, who played in the CBA from 2015-16, declared in October 2016 that he was done with basketball and would not return as a player.

He appeared in The Basketball Tournament in July 2018.

Oden was voted the 7th overall pick in the 2019 Big3 Draft in May 2019. He is considered by basketball analysts as one of the best draft busts in NBA history.

Early years

At the age of nine, Oden was born in Buffalo, New York, and he and his family migrated to Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended Sarah Scott Middle School in Terre Haute, where he first played interscholastic basketball. Oden and his mother and brother later moved to Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he competed in three consecutive Indiana Class 4A basketball championships before graduating in 2006. He was named Parade's High School Co-Player of the Year 2005 (along with Monta Ellis) and 2005 National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. In 2006, he was named Gatorade National Basketball Player of the Year. Oden was named Mr. Basketball in Indiana in 2006. He was also on the McDonald's All-American Team and competed in the All-American game, winning first-team Parade All-American honors for the second year in a row.

Greg Oden Career

College career

Starting with the 2006–07 season, Oden and Lawrence North teammate Mike Conley, Jr., announced on June 29, 2005 that they will be attending Ohio State University.

On June 16, 2006, Oden underwent surgery in Indianapolis to fix a ligament injury that occurred late in his senior high school career. As a result, he served on the Ohio State bench from 2006-2007, when the Buckeyes were ranked as the top pick before losing to North Carolina. He made his college debut against Valparaiso on December 2, 2006, when he was knocked off the bench against Valparaiso. He had 14 points, ten rebounds, and 5 blocks in the game. Steve Kerr described him as a "once-in-a-decade player" in December of this year.

On January 29, 2007, the Big Ten honored Oden as Player of the Week, as well as Wisconsin's Alando Tucker. He had averaged 18 points and 11.5 rebounds in the previous week. On March 6, 2007, Oden was named First Team All-Big Ten as well as being named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. In the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Oden fouled out for the first time in his college career against Xavier, and the tournament was marred by foul weather. Oden blocked a potential game-winning shot against Tennessee in the final seconds to win by 85-84, and he went on to lead Ohio State over Memphis and Georgetown to the 2007 National Championship. In a losing game against the Florida Gators, Oden scored 25 points, had 12 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots.

The Associated Press All-American Team was named alongside Kevin Durant, Arron Afflon, Alando Tucker, and Acie Law. The first freshmen to vote for the All-American First Team since 1990, Oden and Durant were among the third and fourth overall. Oden has never lost a home game in high school and college.

Professional career

Oden revealed on April 20, 2007, that he would be entering the 2007 NBA draft. He was the top overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers on June 28, 2007. Oden chose the uniform number 52 to start his Trail Blazers career. Oden had signed a two-year contract with two guaranteed seasons and team options for third and fourth seasons as a result of his first NBA appearance on July 1. Oden underwent microfracture surgery on his ailing right knee on September 14, 2007. He missed the entire season. On the Trail Blazers' website and blog, Oden's progress was documented.

Despite being drafted in 2007, Oden was still deemed a rookie for the 2008-09 season due to the knee injury. He was rated at 250 lb (130 kg) in July at the start of the 2008-2009 season, but Blazers' coach Jay Jensen said he weighed about 290 lb (130 kg) in July. After playing thirteen scoreless minutes against the Los Angeles Lakers, Oden sustained a foot injury on his NBA debut. He returned on November 12, 2008, after missing two weeks, and scored his first NBA points against the Miami Heat in the first quarter. In a 102-85 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on January 19, 2009, Oden scored a career-high 24 points while still grabbing 15 rebounds. He hurt his left knee against the Golden State Warriors on February 13, 2009, by bumping knees with opponent Corey Maggette, and missed three weeks due to a chipped knee cap.

In a game again with 24 points on November 23, 2009, Oden tied his career-high for points in a game for the fourth time. In a game with 20 players on December 1, he set a new career record for rebounds. In the first quarter of a game, Oden sustained his left knee injury on December 5, 2009. On two separate stretchers, he was let out of the courthouse. He underwent surgery for a fractured left patella and missed the remainder of the season. Oden missed significant playing time due to illness for the second time.

The team announced on November 17, 2010 that Oden would have microfracture surgery on his left knee, putting an end to his 2010-2011 season. Oden's third NBA season was cut short due to a knee injury.

The Trail Blazers announced on December 9, 2011 that Oden had suffered an unspecified "setback" that left them less hopeful about his prospects in the 2011–2012 season. Oden and the team made a different bid rather than making an 8.9 million-dollar qualifying offer. Oden underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on February 3, 2012. Oden's left knee surgery was scheduled on February 20, 2012, about the same procedure he underwent 17 days earlier. However, during the procedure, more damage to the articular cartilage was discovered, and Oden underwent his third microfracture surgery.

The Trail Blazers had Oden cut off from the roster on March 15, 2012, allowing the Trail Blazers to make room on the roster for trade acquisitions. Oden revealed in May 2012 that he did not expect to miss the 2012–13 season in order to concentrate on recovery of his injuries. Several clubs were interested in signing Oden for the 2013–14 season, according to several outlets in January 2013.

Oden signed a one-year contract with the Miami Heat on August 7, 2013. In a preseason match against the New Orleans Pelicans on October 23, he played in his first NBA game since December 5, 2009. In four minutes of play, he managed to score two points off a dunk attempt and grabbed two rebounds.

Oden returned to the court on January 15, 2014, on his long-awaited return to the court. In a 114–97 loss to the Washington Wizards in his first regular-season game since December 2009, he had 6 points and 2 rebounds in 8 minutes of game time. In the Heat's 93–79 victory over the Chicago Bulls on February 23, 2014, Oden made his first appearance since December 2009. The Heat defeated the San Antonio Spurs in the 2014 NBA Finals. In five games, the team lost the series.

Oden was supposed to be working out with the Memphis Grizzlies in March 2015, although he also returned to his alma mater, Ohio State, to do some "high-level training" with Thad Matta, then Ohio State basketball team coach, then Ohio State basketball coach, then Ohio State basketball coach, John Madden. Oden had been working out with the other Ohio State coaches since September 2014. In June 2015, Oden had workouts with the Charlotte Hornets and the Dallas Mavericks. He announced in the media that he was attempting an NBA comeback with plans to return to the league for the 2016–17 season.

The Chinese Basketball Association's Oden signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Jiangsu Dragons on August 26, 2015. In a victory over Shandong on December 9, he scored a season-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. He left Jiangsu on February 1, 2016. He played 13.0 points, 12.6 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game in 25 games for the club.

In July 2018, Oden decided to play as a reserve with the Scarlet & Gray, a team of Ohio State alumni who competed in The Basketball Tournament 2018, a $2 million winner-take-all summer tournament. On July 27, Oden made his Scarlet & Gray debut, scoring 11 points in 16 minutes of playing time. On July 29, Scarlet & Gray lost to Team Fredette, with Oden playing nine minutes, an assist, and a block.

Post-playing career

Although he went back to finish his degree at the college on April 12, 2016, Oden was hired by the Ohio State Buckeyes men's basketball team to be the team's assistant coach. Oden and his wife have one child. Oden graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor's degree in sport management in 2019.

Oden joined Edyoucore Sports & Entertainment as an athlete advisor on November 21, 2019.

Oden, a basketball coach at Butler University, joined Thad Matta's staff in April 2022 as director of basketball operations.

How the French sensation blends with NBA lottery teams is a mystery

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 14, 2023
Victor Wembanyama, France's top export, is poised to replace wine as France's top export, a 7-foot-4 basketball sensation. He's athletic, skilled, vast, and yet only 19, so the winning team will undoubtedly be considered very lucky as the league selects its first pick on Tuesday night in New York. It's either way or not Wembanyama will feel the same way. The 14 teams in Tuesday's lottery aren't all positive, and that's by design. The lottery is supposed to enhance the league's bottom feeders by (slightly) deterring them from tanking their seasons in an attempt to land a top talent in the draft, such as Wembanyama. Mail Online's preview of Wembanyama's 14 future teams, how he'd fit, and what these clubs need to do to attract the NBA's most coveted prospect in a generation.
