Grant Hart Life

Grant Vernon Hart (March 18, 1961-September 13, 2017) was an American singer and co-songwriter for the alternative rock and hardcore punk band Hüsker Dü, as the drummer and co-songwriter.

He formed the alternative rock band Nova Mob, where he shifted to vocals and guitar after the band's breakup in 1988.

Since Nova Mob's dissolution in 1997, his solo career became his main focus. Hüsker Dü's songs (including "The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill") and "Turn on the News") have received acclaim from critics and contemporaries as the co-songwriter.

His vocal style, in comparison to that of Hüsker Dü bandmate Bob Mould's, was more measured and melodic.

His selection of lyrical subjects, ranging from teenage alienation in "Standing by the Sea" and the representation of a murder in "Diane," to playful story-telling in "Books About UFOs," helped to broaden the topic of hardcore punk. Hart died of liver cancer and Hepatitis C. in September 13, 2017.

Grant Hart Career

Solo career and Nova Mob

Hart found that his diagnosis as HIV positive was incorrect six months after Hüsker Dü's breakup. He released the solo EP, 2541, on Hüsker Dü's former label SST in 1988. The title was taken from the address of his former band's office and rehearsal house, where the members once lived. The title song will be released by Marshall Crenshaw, as will Go-Betweens' Robert Forster. Hart went deeper into sobriety after the release of the EP, recording and releasing the album Intolerance, as well as the EP All of My Senses in 1989 and 1990.

In late 1989, he formed Nova Mob, with Michael Crego on drums, Tom Merkl on bass, and Hart himself playing guitar. The band took their name from William Burroughs' book Nova Express; it had previously been used by an unrecorded group starring Julian Cope and Pete Wylie. In 1991, the band recorded their first EP Admiral of the Sea and album The Last Days of Pompeii. Marc Retish and Steve Sutherland on drums and then Steve Sutherland on guitar, and Chris Hesler on lead guitar were added to the lineup later. The band toured Europe on a warm welcome. Nova Mob's second album, Nova Mob, was released in 1994, but after a supporting tour, it was scrapped.

Hart returned to recording as a solo artist with the launch of the live album Ecce Homo in 1995 and Good News for Modern Man in late 1999. On October 21, 2004, he and Mould reunited at the benefit concert for Karl Mueller (bassist for fellow Minneapolis stalwarts Soul Asylum), who was then fighting what would be a losing battle with cancer.

Hart's next solo album (and first in a decade), Hot Wax, was released in Montreal and Minneapolis. "I'm working on some stuff with the Godspeed You," Hart said in September 2006. People of the Black Emperor. They've all enjoyed more in a few weeks than Bob did in nine years with Hüsker Dü. Hart was one of the guest performers on Lotuk's third album, a Belgian band combining roots and dance music in 2008. On his Myspace page, Hart introduced "Schoolbuses Are For Children" in the summer of 2008. On October 6, 2009, he first introduced Hot Wax. On February 9, 2010, Intolerance was reissued on 180-gram vinyl, and The Last Days of Pompeii was reissued on December 7, 2010 with additional tracks and new mastering.

Hart began on a short tour of Ireland in December 2012 with Colm O'Herlihy on guitar, Dan Walsh on drums, and Simon Dargan on bass. In a Facebook Q&A, Hart said: "I love playing with these guys." Rather than getting bogged down debating a band's activities, they let me make music rather than getting bogged down with administration. "They make it a pleasure in their own ways" He revealed this lineup for his forthcoming European and US dates. Hart's most recent release, The Argument (based on John Milton's Paradise Lost) was released in the summer of 2013.

Everybody: Grant Hart's Music, Life & Times documentary film directed by Gorman Bechard in October 2013, a film about the musician's life from birth to the recording of The Argument. Hart is the only interview subject in the film, and he's told in the style of Errol Morris' film The Fog of War.

Hart has been recognized twice on the Minneapolis nightclub First Avenue outside mural, one for his solo work and one for Hüsker Dü. The stars honor performers who have appeared in sold-out shows or otherwise demonstrated a major contribution to the culture of the historic venue. According to journalist Steve Marsh, receiving a celebrity "could be the most coveted public accolade an artist can receive in Minneapolis."

The Posies recorded "Grant Hart" in honor of Grant Hart and his collaboration with Hüsker Dü, which was released on their 1996 album Amazing Disgrace.

Grant Hart married Brigid McGough Hart at the Assumption Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, on July 5, 2017.

Hart died at 9:02 p.m. on September 13, 2017 at Fairview University of Minnesota Hospital, from liver cancer and hepatitis C. He was 56 years old. He is survived by his wife Brigid McGough Hart and son Karl Turbinon.
