Grady Sutton Career

Career

Sutton began his career in silent film making the switch to sound films in the college themed shorts The Boy Friends. He went on to dozens of character roles, including some of the best-looking country boys. Frank Dowling, Katharine Hepburn's dancing partner, appeared in Alice Adams (1935) and as a foil to W.C. Fields (1940).

William J. Mann, a film critic, likes Sutton as a classic "Hollywood Sissy," referring to a gay actor who tended to portray an effeminate character for comedic effect.

He continued to work in the 1950s and 1960s, eventually retiring from acting in 1979. In the commentary for My Fair Lady, the strength of his links with Fields was so evident that it was mentioned. Sutton appears in several of the formal-dress plays and also does some comedic shtick, and he gives some of the formal scenes a non-speaking role. "An old W. C. Fields actor" is referred to by the commentator.

Sutton appeared in an episode of The Odd Couple on television, as well as some commercials.
