Gordon Shedden Career

Racing career

Shedden, a native of Edinburgh, began racing in the Ford Fiesta Championship in 1999 with Tim Norton Motor Services Ltd. The Timnortonn Motors.co.uk team took over the race in the following season with nine victories. He competed in the SEAT Cupra Championship, finishing as runner-up in 2003 and 2004 and fourth in 2004. He made his one-off appearance in the BTCC's Production Class at Knockhill in 2001, and in the Porsche Carrera Cup Great Britain in 2005. He was registered in the 2002 BTCC by GR Motorsport in an Alfa Romeo, but it never got to the track. He and his partner Jillian have served as Business Development Manager for the Knockhill circuit. He has competed at Macau many times.

Shedden was selected by Team Halfords to drive for them in the BTCC in 2006, alongside reigning series champion Matt Neal, who said, "it's awesome to have a teammate that I can learn so much from." In round 7 at Oulton Park, he won his first match in the series and then added another in round ten at Thruxton, where he earned his first pole position. In 2006, he finished fourth overall with five victories, and as the year's rookie of the year. In 2007, his team migrated to the Honda Civic, winning their first four games in a row. He was still fourth overall, four ranks behind Neal.

He was the team leader alongside Tom Chilton in 2008, with Neal leaving to join VX Racing. He finished 2nd in the season opener but then fell heavily in race 3. He did not finish at Wimbledon Park, and Thruxton he did not win races 1 and 3, but he suffered punctures on lap 8 of both races. He was ranked seventh in the Drivers Championship.

Shedden, a former Luton Town F.C., joined Team Dynamics (previously Team Halfords) in 2009. David Pinkney, Chairman, was on the verge of being sacked. He also served as Team Ambassador for new racing team YourRacingCar.com, who competed in the Ginetta G50 Cup for the first year together. He had been ranked 9th in the Drivers Standings at the time, but James Thompson was later replaced by him.

James Thompson would be replacing Shedden in the Team Dynamics vehicle for the remainder of the 2009 season on April 15, 2009. Gordon's team revealed that it was working on grants for a 3rd car that would run later this season. However, Clyde Valley Racing had signed Snetterton Shedden before the round. They were cut from the rest of the season after competing in two events for the team. Shedden restarted the series in the penultimate round with the same bio-ethanol SEAT León that he competed for CVR under the Club SEAT banner after missing the Silverstone round. Despite all the changes Shedden managed two podiums in 2009 and finished 12th in the Drivers Standings.

Shedden and Neal were re-signed by the company after Team Dynamics became a full manufacturer Honda team ahead of the 2010 season. Shedden led the first run of the season at Thruxton but suffered a 125 mph shunt as a result of a puncture. Shedden won two races at Croft Circuit, followed by victories at Snetterton, Knockhill, and Donington, and finishing third in the Drivers Championship.

With the Honda Civic now powered by an NGTC turbocharged engine, Shedden continued with Honda for the 2011 season. He finished second in second place in the team's championship, 8 points behind teammate Matt Neal, who was his only title challenger in the season's penultimate race.

Shedden joined Honda in 2012 and was driving the latest full-NGTC Honda Civic. Matt Neal, his colleague, for the third year in a row. He had a rough start to Brands Hatch, and his car was plagued with electrical issues for the majority of the weekend. After his team worked on his vehicle during the red flag period, he was disqualified from the third race of the day. Shedden won two out of three races, one of whom was inherited due to penalties for Mat Jackson and Jason Plato, while the other two others were inherited. After the first race, Plato's problems at Oulton Park and strong results put him in the championship lead. He was second in the championship going into the summer break, one point behind teammate Neal. In the first free practice session of the season at Snetterton, Shedden's car caught fire. Shedden came third in class three, but post-race scrutiny found that his Honda had been over-boosting, effectively disqualifying him from the results. He took two of the three races at Rockingham in rainy weather, where he regained the championship lead. In race two at Brands Hatch, Shedden claimed his first BTCC title, finishing second behind Aron Smith.

Shedden and Neal were retained by the Honda team in 2013 for a pair of Honda Civics. He was disqualified from the second run of the season's second run after failing the ride height test, advancing Jeff Smith to the final podium position. He came in second place in the standings, just 7 points away from keeping his crown.

For a year, the Honda team made the switch to run the latest Honda tourer model. Despite this, it was very unsuccessful. Shedden won two titles, 8 podiums, and finished third in the drivers championship.

The company ran two of the brand new Honda Type Rs. in 2015. In just the second race of the season, Shedden won the cars for the first time. In what was supposed to be one of the most exciting and dramatic title showdowns ever, Shedden took the title by just 4 points from Jason Plato, his second drivers title.

Matt Neal received his second drivers title for the team in 2016, and Halfords resurfaced as the team's primary sponsor for the team's first ten years. Shedden defeated the first round after being beaten on the ground. However, Shedden finished ninth in the standings at the halfway point due to a lean spell mid season due to some bad luck. Shedden would win by 3 victories and four podiums in the second half of the season to close the gap to BMW's Sam Tordoff by a points margin. Shedden defeated Tordoff to win his third championship title in the season's final battle. Shedden became the first woman to successfully defend his throne since Fabrizio Giovanardi in 2008.

Shedden resigned from Team Dynamics in January 2018, indicating that he was heading for "pastures new" instead. He later announced that he would compete in the World Touring Car Cup championship, while the W Racing Team Audi Works crew was driving. In December 2019, the WRT team revealed that it will not be competing in 2020 in the World Touring Cup, leaving Gordon without a seat.
