Early life and education
Gloria Estefan (née Fajardo Garca) was born in Havana, Cuba, on September 1, 1957 to parents José Fajardo (1933–1980) and Gloria Garca (1930–2017). Estefan's maternal grandparents were Spanish immigrants. Leonardo Garca's maternal grandfather emigrated to Cuba from Pola de Siero, Spain, where he married Gloria's grandmother, Consuelo Perez, who was born in Logros, Spain, where he married her grandmother, Consuelo Perez. Pantaleón Perez, the father of Consuelo, served as the head chef to two Cuban presidents. Estefan's paternal side had musical sensibilities as the lineage contained a famous flautist and a classical pianist.

José Estefan's father, José de La Vega, was involved in the epoch of the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961. He was kidnapped by his uncle, a soldier of Fidel Castro's army, and detained in Cuba for nearly two years. On his return to the US military, he served in the Vietnam war.
Estefan's father became sick with multiple sclerosis after returning from Vietnam in 1968, which was owing to Agent Orange's exposure to Vietnam. Estefan and her younger sister Rebecca, nicknamed "Becky" (b. ), helped her mother care for him and her younger sister Rebecca. (Wenford, 1963) while her mother worked to care for them. Gloria Fajardo was forced to reclaim her teaching experience and then served as a schoolteacher for the Dade County Public School system. Estefan was nine years old when she was discovered that a music instructor had been hired to teach her guitar lessons sexually assaulted her. She argued that if she told anyone about the abuse, the man told her that if she told her that if she told her about it, she would murder her mother. Estefan told her mother, who notified the police of the allegation; charges were not brought forward due to the additional trauma she felt Estefan would suffer as a result of her testimony against the perpetrator. When Estefan was 16 years old, her father's illness led him to his hospitalization at a Veterans Administration medical center.

Personal life
Emilio Estefan, the Miami Sound Machine's band leader, became intimately involved with Estefan in 1976. "He was my first and only boyfriend," she later revealed. They married on September 2, 1978, and they have a son, Nayib (born September 2, 1980), and a daughter, Emily (born December 5, 1994). Emily was born after Gloria's devastating tour bus accident in 1990; doctors told her she would not be able to have any more children. On Star Island, the family lives.

Career
When attending a church ensemble rehearsal in 1975, Estefan and her cousin Mercedes "Merci" Navarro (1957-2007) met Emilio Estefan, Jr. Emilio, who had formed the Miami Latin Boys earlier this year, learned about Estefan through a mutual acquaintance. Although the Miami Latin Boys were attending a Cuban wedding at the Dupont Plaza Hotel, Estefan and Navarro, weeping, who were wedding guests, exceeded Cuban expectations. They impressed the Miami Latin Boys so much that they were invited to join the band permanently, with the band's name changing to Miami Sound Machine. Miss Little Havana, Estefan's dance-oriented album, was released in the United States on September 27, 2011, with the physical CD available only at Target.
