Early life and education
Glenn Franklin Howerton III was born in Japan on April 13, 1976, the son of American parents Janice and Glenn Franklin Howerton Jr. His father was a fighter pilot. His family was moved to Arizona and then New Mexico for a short time right after his birth, and then New Mexico for a short time. They moved to Felixstowe, Suffolk, England, when he was three years old. They then moved to Virginia, followed by South Korea, where they settled in Seoul. His family immigrated to Alabama when he was ten years old. He spent two years at New World School of the Arts of Montgomery, Alabama, after graduating from Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery, Alabama. He was a member of Group 29 of the Juilliard School's Drama Division (1996–2000), where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from 1996-2000.

In 2002, Howerton appeared as Corey Howard on That '80s Show.' In 2003, he became a guest star on ER as Dr. Nick Cooper. He appeared in the films Must Love Dogs (2006), Serenity (2005), Two Weeks (2006), and The Strangers (2008). In Crank (2006), he also appeared as a doctor, and in its 2009 sequel, Crank: High Voltage. Howerton is the most prominent cast, producer, and director of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-2010), and has also written numerous episodes. Before the performance was postponed, he was supposed to be executive producing on Boldly Going Nowhere with his It's Always Sunny co-creators. Howerton appeared on The Cleveland Show as Ernie Krinklesac, as well as regular appearances on Fox comedy's The Mindy Project and the FX dark comedy series Fargo.
