Life and career

Mazzara, an Italian-American, was born in Manhattan, New York City, and grew up in Queens. In 1985, he graduated from St. Francis Preparatory School. He attended NYU and obtained a master's in English. He began as a hospital administrator in New York before heading to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a writer in 1998.

For the fourth and fifth seasons of Nash Bridges, he served as a story editor and writer. He began to write for the second season while writing; to executive producer for the fourth season and executive producer for the fifth season; and then to executive producer for the sixth season in 2006. He was an executive producer on the short-lived series Standoff and then a co-executive producer on the first season of NBC drama Life.

Mazzara left Life to create and executive produce a new series Crash based on the Oscar-winning film of the same name, on which he appeared as both a writer and showrunner. He left after one season but was acknowledged as a consulting producer on the second season's premiere.

He appeared on the medical drama series Hawthorne for two seasons as executive producer and writer in 2009. In 2010, he wrote his first of many episodes of AMC's The Walking Dead, episode 1.5: "Wildfire."

After Frank Darabont came out of the picture, Mazzara had taken over as showrunner of The Walking Dead on July 27, 2011. Following season 3, Mazzara left the role. He signed a long-term contract with Fox Television Studios in 2013. He appeared on The Walking Dead in 2013.

Glen Mazzara is the creator, Executive Producer, and Showrunner of A&E's Damien film, based on the classic horror film The Omen.

Mazzara joined many other writers in dismissing their agents as part of the WGA's fight against the ATA and unfair practice of packing on April 15, 2019.
