She was discovered in 2004 when practising her vocals and then booked to perform a duet with the ADA Band.
Gutawa was approached by Sony Music Indonesia after 2005, when the duet appeared on the duet, and was asked by the Indonesian government to record a solo album.
Several acting and marketing jobs have opened as a result of the album's success, the self-titled Gita Gutawa.
She has released two more albums, the well-received Harmoni Cinta in 2009, and the Islamic-themed Balada Shalawat in 2010.
She has appeared in two Indonesian soap operas, Ajari Aku Cinta and Ajari Lagi Aku Cinta.
She performed a role for Meraih Mimpi and made her debut in 2010's Love in Perth, a television series. Dian Kuswandini of The Jakarta Post has characterized Gutawa as "sweet like cotton candy and warm as a kiss," but Gutawa has noted that there are people who believe she succeeded by nepotism.
Gutawa has received many accolades, including Best Newcomer at the 2008 Anugerah Musik Indonesia awards.
She has also won the 6th International Nile Children's Song Festival in Cairo.
Education
She was voted the best student in elementary and junior high school for five years in a row. She returned to Al-Izhar Junior High School instead of being homeschooled like most Indonesian children because she found that "attending a regular school is more interesting," with more peers and opportunities to socialize. She later attended Bina Nusantara Senior High School. Gutawa was chosen by the education-oriented Sampoerna Foundation in 2009 as the company's first youth ambassador, participating in the company's activities. She promised that part of Harmony Cinta's sales would be used to bring poor Indonesian children to school; every twenty albums sold would be enough for one child.
