Giorgio Chiellini Life

Giorgio Chiellini (Italian pronunciation: [ˈdʒordʒo kjelˈliːni, ˈdʒɔr-]; born 14 August 1984) is an Italian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC. Considered one of the best defenders of his generation, Chiellini is known for his strength, aggressiveness and man-marking, as well as his ability to play in either a three or four-man defence. He has also played as a left-back earlier in his career.

At club level, Chiellini began his career with Livorno in 2000, also later playing for Fiorentina, before moving to Juventus in 2005. With Juventus, he has won a record-nine consecutive Serie A titles from 2012 to 2020, as well as five Coppa Italia titles and five Supercoppa Italiana titles, having also played two UEFA Champions League finals in 2015 and 2017. Chiellini has been named in the Serie A Team of the Year five times: in 2012–13, 2014–15, 2015–16, 2017–18 and 2018–19 and has been awarded the Serie A Defender of the Year also three times: in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Having made his international debut for Italy in 2004, Chiellini was selected in the nation's squads for the 2004 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal, as well as for four UEFA European Championships, two FIFA World Cups and two FIFA Confederations Cups, helping the Azzurri to win UEFA Euro 2020, reach the final of UEFA Euro 2012, and achieve a third-place finish at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. He retired from international football in 2022 with 117 caps, making him Italy's joint fourth-highest appearance holder.

Personal life

Chiellini was raised in Livorno and is one of twin boys. He completed a laurea (bachelor's degree) in economics and commerce at the University of Turin in July 2010, and earned a laurea magistrale (master's degree) in business administration in April 2017 from the same institution, graduating cum laude (with honours). Chiellini also speaks English fluently.

In July 2014, Chiellini married his long-time girlfriend Carolina Bonistalli at a private Catholic ceremony at the Sanctuary of Montenero in Livorno. The couple have two daughters: Nina born July 2015, and Olivia born June 2019. That same year, he published a book, C'è un angelo bianconero. Il mio maestro si chiama Scirea.

Chiellini features in EA Sports' FIFA video game series; he was on the covers of the Italian editions of FIFA 10, alongside global cover star Ronaldinho, and FIFA 11, alongside global cover star Kaká.

Throughout the 2017–18 season, Chiellini appeared in the Netflix docu-series First Team: Juventus.

In 2020, Chiellini released his autobiography Io, Giorgio, with the profits going to the insuperabili charity during the COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. However, Chiellini attracted controversy due to his strong criticism of his former club and international teammates Felipe Melo and Mario Balotelli in his book.

Giorgio Chiellini Career

Club career

Chiellini joined the Livorno youth team at age six and began as a central midfielder. He grew up as he progressed, and then found his position as a left back. He spent time in the club's youth academy between 1990 and 2000. He participated in Torneo di Arco as a member of his appeal in 2000, but despite being rated highly by youth coach Davide Ballardini, he did not get a bid to join the team permanently. Chiellini started getting his first call-ups to the senior team in 2000-2001 and then made three appearances and then followed that up with five more appearances the following season.

Chiellini was signed by Roma in a co-ownership contract worth €3.1 million (who also saw Marco Amelia move to Livorno in the opposite direction) in June 2002, but after receiving promotion, he was loaned back to Livorno for the 2002–03 Serie B season. Chiellini made six seasonal appearances in his first Serie B season, as well as his Coppa Italia debut. Chiellini broke into the club's starting lineup in his second season as a coach, and the team will make 42 official appearances as a result of his left back position.

Livorno acquired Chiellini's back in June 2004 for €3 million. Chiellini made 57 appearances, scoring four goals, during his four-season work with the clubs' first team before moving to Juventus.

Chiellini was signed by Juventus in the summer 2004 for €6.5 million from Livorno but shortly sold in a co-ownership agreement to Fiorentina for €3.5 million, and spent time with the Florentine team during the 2004-05 Serie A season. The complicated contract ended in Juventus buying Roma's half for €3 million, while Fiorentina bought Livorno's half for €3.5 million. Chiellini made 42 official appearances, as well as scoring three goals in his loan season with the club.

Chiellini was recalled for the 2005-06 season after an excellent first season in Serie A, and Juventus charged him €4.3 million for the remainder of his deal. He made 23 appearances in his first season with the club, as well as the Old Lady's 29th scudetto (which was later assigned to Inter following the 2006 "Calciopoli" scandal).

He began playing center back, assisting Nicola Legrottaglie, Jean-Alain Boumsong, and Robert Kovak at various points of the season. Juventus gained Serie B promotion with the biggest goal difference, conceding only 30 goals and scoring over 80 percent in 42 games. In a 5–1 thrashing at Arezzo in May, he scored a double, a typhoon promotion for Juventus.

Chiellini was a starter for the club at left back until injuries, but he was shifted to centre back again after injuries to Jorge Andrade and Domenico Criscito. Chiellini had a fruitful season and eventually assumed the role as his own. Juventus's centre, Nicola Legrottaglie, was instrumental in the season's second best defensive record. Neither were considered remotely close to securing a central back position in the summer ahead of the season, with Domenico Criscito and Jorge Andrade selected as the starting pair. Since returning to Serie A, he has been a fixture in Juventus's backline, winning a physical and emotional duel with former teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovi, keeping the Swedish striker at bay. Chiellini's original deal from 2009 to 2011 was extended from 2009 to 2011. Chiellini scored twice for Juventus in a 5–2 victory over Lazio, who confirmed Juventus's place in the top four in Serie A on April 27, 2008. Chiellini's contract with Juventus had been extended until 2013.

Chiellini remained the first choice in central defense during the 2008–09 season, alongside Nicola Legrottaglie. Juve defeated Artmedia Petro 4–0 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie, with Chiellini scoring his first goal in Europe on August 13th. He injured his left knee again during the Trofeo Berlusconi against AC Milan on September 24 and missed the start of the season Serie A, winning in each of Juve's first three Champions League group games. At the annual Oscar del Calcio awards ceremony, he was named Serie A Defender of the Year for 2008. Chiellini was sent off for his second bookable offense during the Champions League's first knockout round second leg match against Chelsea, but Juventus were disqualified 3–2 on aggregate after holding the former English champions to a 2–2 draw on aggregate on March 10, 2009.

Juventus suffered an injury in the victory over Fiorentina on March 6, 2010 and he missed nine goals in the four games he missed. He marked his return by scoring the first goal away from Napoli in Napoli, but Juventus was unable to prevent Juventus from losing 3–1 to Napoli. Chiellini extended his deal with Juventus until the end of June 2015, earning him a salary increase.

Chiellini was mainly partnered with newly signed youngster Leonardo Bonucci during the 2010–11 season. Chiellini occasionally played at left back to accommodate the Bonucci-Barzagli collaboration, which also partnered Barzagli in the winter transfer window, as well as fellow Italy international Andrea Barzagli.

Chiellini returned to his former position at left back under new boss Antonio Conte due to Barzagli and Bonucci's good run of form. After struggling to re-integrate back to his old position, he stepped into his role and kept Paolo De Ceglie, the only other natural left back in the team's squad, on the bench for most of the 2011-2012 season. Conte changed to a three-man defense in the second half of the 2011–12 season, where Chiellini partnered Bonucci and Barzagli with Bonucci and Barzagli in a very efficient defensive system for Juve, who then finished the season as the best defensive record in the league as well as being undefeated in the league. Due to their success together, the three-man defense earned the nickname BBC, a reference to the players' initials, and the trio soon established themselves as one of the best defences in world football. Juventus lost the 2012 Coppa Italia Final against Napoli but would later defeat them in the 2012 Supercopa Italiana, although Chiellini would miss the match.

In a 2–0 home win over Chievo on September 22, Chiellini made his 250th appearance with Juventus, his first appearance of the 2012–13 season, after coming back from injury. Juventus beat Napoli 1-1,335 points on March 1, 2013, after recovering from another injury in mid-December, which allowed Juventus to hold their 6-point advantage over Napoli, who were in second place. Juventus won the Serie A and the Supercoppa Italiana that season, again finishing the year with Italy's best defensive record. Chiellini was the only Italian player to be selected for the 2013 UEFA Team of the Year.

Chiellini scored in Juventus's 3–2 victory over Milan on October 6, 2013, scoring the match winning goal; the following day, he announced the extension of his deal with Juventus, which will keep him at the club until 2017. In a 3–0 Serie A win over Roma on January 5, he earned his third straight league title with Juventus.

Juventus was defeated by Napoli on penalties after a 2–2 draw after extra time; Chiellini missed one of Juventus's spot-kicks in the resulting shoot-out in the 2014 Supercoppa Italiana; In the 2015 Coppa Italia Final, Chiellini captained Juventus in their 2–1 victory over Lazio in the club's 2–1 victory over Lazio, while also scoring Juventus's first goal of the night.

Chiellini will not participate in the 2015 UEFA Champions League Final against Barcelona, according to a scan of his left leg revealed a first degree calf muscle tear. Juventus was defeated 3–1 by Barcelona at Berlin's Olympiastadion in the absence of Chiellini.

After suffering an injury in a 2–1 away friendly victory over Lechia Gda on July 29, Chiellini was disqualified from the 2015 Supercopa Italiana, which kept him sidelined for three weeks. Chiellini was nominated for the 2015 UEFA Team of the Year on November 24.

Chiellini would miss the match against Napoli on February 13, as well as the first round of the Champions League against Bayern Munich on February 23, 2016. Chiellini returned to action on February 28th as he took on Internazionale, but he suffered a thigh injury that forced him to limp off the field and force him to limp off the pitch in the 35th minute. With already having missed the first round of the 16 leg against Bayern, there was already concern that he would miss the second leg as well on March 16th. However, following medical examinations, it was estimated that he would only be out for ten days, first thought he would miss the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals against Internazionale on March 2nd and a Serie A match against Atalanta on March 6th; he would not be fit for the second leg of the Champions League; he would not be able to participate in the second round of the Champions League; he would not be out for the second leg He recovered from injury on April 2nd, starting with a 1–0 home win over Empoli, but then suffered yet another injury to his adductor longus muscle in his right thigh in the 54th minute of that match; further tests in the coming days revealed he would be out for 20 days. In a 2–1 away loss to Verona on May 8, he returned to action once more. Chiellini scored in the 77th minute of a 5–0 home win over Sampdoria on May 14th, his fifth appearance for Juventus since 2011. Chiellini captained Juventus in the 2016 Coppa Italia Final in Rome on May 21; he was instrumental in the club's 11th Coppa Italia title in total), assisting his team in defending the title and keeping a clean sheet. Later, he lifted the trophy as Juventus became the first Italian club to win consecutive domestic doubles.

After being out for three weeks due to injury, Chiellini scored two goals in a 4–1 home victory over Sampdoria on October 26. Chiellini scored the first goal in the Supercoppa Italiana against Milan on December 23 but Milan lost 4–3 in a penalty shoot-out after extra time.

In a 2–2 away draw against Atalanta on April 28, he made his 300th appearance in Serie A with Juventus. He started in the 2017 final, Juventus' second final appearance in three years, but Real Madrid defeated them 4–1.

Due to a calf injury, Chiellini was unable to attend the first 2017-18 Champions League group stage match of the season against Barcelona on September 12, 2017.

Chiellini was selected to the 2017 UEFA Team of the Year on January 11, 2018. In a 0–0 away draw against S.P.A.L. on March 17, he made his 350th appearance in Serie A.

Since Buffon's demise, Chiellini was granted a two-year deal extension until 2020 and also named the club's new captain on June 29.

Following a 1–0 victory over Milan, Chiellini lifted his first title as Juventus's new official captain, the Supercoppa Italiana. Chiellini's 500th appearance in a Juventus jersey came with a 3–0 victory over Atlético Madrid in the Champions League's second leg on March 12, overcoming a 2–0 deficit to advance to the quarter-finals. Juventus emerged league champions at the end of the season, with Chiellini winning his eighth Serie A crown with the club.

Chiellini scored the only goal of the game against Parma on August 24 in Juventus's first match of the 2019-20 season. Chiellini tore his anterior cruciate ligament during preparation on August 30. In a match against Brescia on February 16, he returned on February 16, 2020, swapping Leonardo Bonucci in the 78th minute. Chiellini signed a new deal with Juventus on June 29th, extending until June 2021.

Chiellini won his first Champions League appearance in the team's opening European game of the season on October 20th, defeating Alessio Tacchinardi as the club's third-most capped player of the season; however, Merih Demiral was forced to withdraw from his duties during the first half.

Chiellini renewed his deal with Juventus on August 2nd, 2021, extending his deal until June 2023. However, Chiellini revealed that after losing the 2022 Coppa Italia Final, he would leave Juventus at the end of the season.

Chiellini agreed to join Los Angeles FC in the Major League Soccer franchise until 2023 with Targeted Allocation Funds. Chiellini made his debut against Nashville SC on July 17th, 2022, when he was called to the 60th minute.

International career

Chiellini played for Italy at both youth and senior levels, gained the European Under-19 Championship with Italy in 2003, and was a member of the Italy team that defeated the bronze medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics. He served as Italy's captain in the 2006 and 2007 U-21 Championships, scoring 2 goals in both tournaments, although Italy was eliminated in the group stage on both occasions. He was selected in the 2007 U-21 Championships in the Netherlands, where Italy also qualified for the 2008 Summer Olympics. He made 26 appearances for the Under-21 team, scoring 6 goals on each.

On November 17, 2004 against Finland, he made his debut for the Italian national team under Marcello Lippi at the age of 20. He has been a member of Italy's regular squad since 2007, and he scored his first goal for Italy against the Faroe Islands in Modena on November 21, 2007, which was UEFA Euro 2008 qualifying match.

Chiellini was called up to Italy's squad for UEFA Euro 2008 under new coach Roberto Donadoni, and injured captain Fabio Cannavaro in a crash during a training session that resulted in Cannavaro's withdrawal from the tournament. He was disqualified in the first game against the Netherlands, which Italy lost 3–0. In the second group match of the tournament, he was granted permission to partner Christian Panucci at center-back from the second game onwards, solidifying his place in the Azzurri defense; in the second group match of the tournament, he assisted Panucci's equalizer in a 1–1 draw against Romania. Despite participating in the final group game, retaining a clean sheet in a 2–0 victory over France, David Villa and Fernando Torres' most impressive performance in the quarter-finals was unquestionably against Spain, where he gracefully denied the danger of the Spanish attacking pair. The game ended 0–0, with Italy losing 4–2 on penalties.

Chiellini established himself as the undisputed first choice in Marcello Lippi's squad during 2010 World Cup qualifying. In all three group matches at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, he played the full 90 minutes, but Italy was disqualified at the group stage on goal difference. He was also the starting center back for Italy's 2010 World Cup, alongside Cannavaro, but Italy was dissatisfied and exiled in the first round, losing by two points and failing to win a match or keeping a clean sheet.

Chiellini was once more the starting center back during Italy's UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign under Cesare Prandelli. After recovering from an injury he sustained during the season's final Serie A game, Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci, as well as Daniele De Rossi, he began in defence for Italy in the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament. In Italy's last group match against Ireland, which resulted in a 2–0 victory, effectively leaving him out of the quarter-finals against England; he returned to the starting lineup for Italy's 2–1 semi-final victory over Germany. Italy qualified to the final, but Spain defeated them once more, losing 4–0. Despite suffering a minor injury in the semi-final, Chiellini started as left behind in the final, but he was forced to return from his injury; Spain's first goal of the match came from his mistake.

For the first time in his career, Chiellini wore the captain's armband with Italy on November 14th.

Chiellini scored his third goal for Italy against Brazil in the 2013 Confederations Cup, losing by 2–4 on June 22, 2013; a poor shot to the net after the referee Ravshan Irmatov had initially called for a penalty kick to Italy. Following a 3–2 penalty shootout win over Uruguay in the bronze medal match, Italy managed to finish third in the tournament.

Chiellini scored Italy's first goal in a 2–1 home victory over the Czech Republic on September 10th, allowing the country to clinch the top spot in their group and qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, with two games at hand.

Suárez was bitten in the left shoulder by Suárez from behind during Italy's final group stage game against Uruguay, Chiellini, in Italy's last group stage game against Uruguay, Chiellini. It was Suárez's third time biting incident in his career. Uruguay gained a corner and scored, qualifying for the last 16 and destroying Italy as the Italian players protested to Mexican referee Marco Antonio Rodrez for not penalizing Suárez. As a result, the FIFA Discipline Committee launched an investigation into the incident. Suárez will be suspended for nine matches and barred from any football-related work (including going to a stadium) for four months, according to the FIFA Discipline Committee on June 26. Suárez was also fined CHF100,000 (approx). (€65,700/€82,000/US$119,000) Nonetheless, Chiellini maintained that the four-month ban on Suárez for all football-related activities, as well as anti-immigration, was "excessive." "The rage and dissatisfaction with the match have only grown." My only hope at the moment is for Luis and his family because they will face a very difficult period. After the game, Chiellini said he wished Suarez would be allowed to stay with his teammates at World Cup games "because such a ban is really strange for a player." In his autobiography, Chiellini said that he could sympathize with Suarez's competitive spirit.

Chiellini led Italy ahead by a header in a UEFA Euro 2016 qualifier versus Azerbaijan in Palermo on October 10, 2014. He then scored a late own goal, but Italy gained a 2–1 victory due to a winner three minutes from time. After a 3–1 victory over Azerbaijan, Italy qualified for Euro 2016 on October 10th. Chiellini made his 82nd appearance for Italy in a 2–2 friendly home draw against Romania on November 17, defeating Franco Baresi, Giuseppe Bergomi, and Marco Tardelli as Italy's tenth most capped player of all time. Chiellini was named to Conte's 23-man Italy squad for Euro 2016, but he was disqualified on May 31, 2016. Chiellini, who played with Bonucci and Barzagli, received accolades for his defensive efforts in both Italy's opening and exiting the nation's first two victories over Belgium and Sweden, which allowed the country to top their group and advance to the second round. Chiellini was forced to miss Italy's final group match against Ireland on June 22, which ended in a 1–0 loss, despite being booked for a tactical foul in the team's opener on June 13th. He scored the first goal in a 2–0 victory over reigning European champions Spain on June 27th, helping Italy win their third clean-sheet of the tournament in the round of 16. On July 2nd, Italy was disqualified from the tournament after losing 6–5 penalty shoot-out to reigning World Cup champions Germany in the quarterfinals.

Chiellini earned his 90th international cap in Italy's opening 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Israel on September 5, 2016, but he was dismissed after a second bookable effort in the 55th minute of an eventual 1–1 draw.

Chiellini also missed the return match against Spain on September 2, an eventual 3–0 away loss, as well as the return march against Israel on September 5, an eventual 1–0 home win with a calf injury. Chiellini made his 94th appearance for Italy in a World Cup qualifier on October 9th, defeating Albania 1–0, bringing the country's joint-eighth highest appearance holder of all time. Italy finished second in Group G, behind Spain, in second place, and advanced to the play-off against Sweden. After losing by 1–0 aggregate to Sweden, Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Chiellini announced his retirement from the national team right after the match, with the second leg, a 0–0 home draw on November 13th.

Despite Chiellini's initial decision to withdraw, interim boss Luigi Di Biagio called him up for the March 2018 friendlies against Argentina and England. However, after suffering an injury, he was dropped from the team, and Angelo Ogbonna was called up in his place.

In September 2018, Roberto Mancini, Italy's first UEFA Nations League matches against Poland and Portugal, he was called up to the national team for the first time. Following Gianluigi Buffon's international retirement, Chiellini was named as the new captain of the Italian national team. In Italy's 1–1 home draw against Poland on September 7, the captain's armband was worn later in the UEFA Nations League's opener. He made his 98th appearance for Italy in a 1–1 friendly draw against Ukraine in Genoa on October 11, equaling Gianluca Zambrotta as his country's joint-seventh highest appearance holder of all time. In his team's final UEFA Nations League match against Portugal, he made his 100th appearance for Italy in a 0–0 draw against Portugal on November 17th.

Chiellini was named in Italy's squad for UEFA Euro 2020 in June 2021. He became Italy's oldest player to compete in the European Championships in the age of 36 years, 301 days, in the first match on June 11th, a 3–0 triumph over Turkey. He had a goal disallowed for a clear handball in Rome's second group match against Switzerland on June 16th and was later forced off in the first half due to injury, but Italy defeated the tournament 3–0, guaranteeing their passage to the round of 16. Chiellini, on the other hand, will recover from his injury following Italy's 2–1 victory over Belgium in the quarter-finals on July 2nd. Following a 3–2 penalty shoot-out victory over England in the final at Wembley Stadium following a 1–1 draw in extra time, he later went on to captain Italy to its second straight European Championship victory on July 11th.

Chiellini revealed on Thursday that he would leave the Italy national team after the 2022 Finalissima against reigning Copa América champions Argentina on June 25. Daniele De Rossi made his final and 117th international appearance, beating him as the team's fourth-most cap player of all time; Italy lost 3–0 at Wembley Stadium, with Chiellini coming off at halftime.

After a lot of backlash over strange rule changes, football's attempt to launch a blue card in DOUBT has been delayed today

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 9, 2024
According to sources, plans to launch a trial of blue cards in football have been put on hold owing to a backlash against the plans. On Thursday, football fans and pundits were left stunned by the news that the new card would be sent to sin-bin players guilty of minor charges for ten minutes, prompting outraged supporters who said the new rule reform would ruin the game. Following backlash against the theory, IFAB's plans have now been put on hold, according to the Telegraph.

According to former refs' chief Keith Hackett, "blue cards are headed to football to'accommodate poor refereeing."

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 9, 2024
Since it was revealed that senators are going to prosecute sin-binning players and issuing blue cards, Keith Hackett believes football is trying to'accommodate poor referees.' Referees will be allowed to condemn players to the sin-bin for ten minutes if they commit a criminal offense, such as the killing of a counter-attack or demonstrating opposition against match officials. Two blues, or a combination of yellow and blue, would add up to a red. According to FA reports, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) will announce their protocols on Friday, and FA sources say it could be trialled in the FA Cup next season.

Until IFAB approved players' suspension to sin-bin for ten minutes for cynical fouls or dissent, the blue cards could be tested in next season's FA Cup

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 8, 2024
KIERAN GILL: Plans for a blue card are due to be revealed as part of football's 10-minute sin-bin trials, marking the first new card to be introduced to the professional game after the 1970 World Cup in Mexico introduced yellows and reds. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is set to announce its protocols on Friday, with blue to be preferred over orange to distinguish it clearly from yellow and red. Referees would have the ability to summon players to the sin-bin if they commit a serious offence, such as killing a counter-attack or expressing opposition against match officials. Two blues, or a blend of yellow and blue, will make it red.
