Gillian Ayres Life

Gillian Ayres (3 February 1930 – April 2018) was an English painter.

She is best known for abstract painting and printmaking, which has earned her a Turner Prize nomination.

Early life and education

Gillian Ayres was born in Barnes, London, on February 3rd, the youngest of three sisters. Stephen Ayres died on February 3rd. When she was six years old, she began attending school. Her parents, a wealthy couple who owned a hatmaking factory, sent her to Ibstock, a Roehampton progressive school based on Fröbel principles.

Ayres was sent by Colet Court, the junior school for St Paul's Hammersmith, in 1941. She took the entrance exam for St Paul's Girls' School the following year and developed an interest in art while there. Shirley Williams, a former London schoolteacher, taught art to children in bomb-ravaged areas.

Ayres then decided to enroll in art school. She applied to the Slade School of Fine Art in 1946 and was accepted. However, she was too young to enroll at sixteen. She was encouraged to enroll in the Camberwell School of Art and spent there from 1946 to 1950.

Personal life

In 1951, Ayres married Henry Mundy, a painter. They divorced nearly 30 years ago but they continued to work together. They had two sons. The pair married with their younger son, who was also a painter.

On the Devon–Cornwall border in 1987, Ayres went from Wales to a 15th-century cottage in Morwenstow. Ayres suffered from pancreatitis and was comatose for four days in the late 1970s. She had a heart attack in 2003.
