Early years
Gilberto Santa Rosa Cortés, the country's birth name, was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He obtained his primary and secondary education and became interested in music. He appeared in his first concert as a youth and in 1976, he made his debut with the Mario Ortiz Orchestra as a backup singer; shortly after, he was hired by La Grande Orchestra, where he became the lead singer. He remained with the orchestra for two years, during which he worked with Elias Lopez, who helped shape and polish him as a singer.

Singing career
He sang Homenaje a Eddie Palmieri (Tribute to Eddie Palmieri) with the Puerto Rican All Stars in the 1980s. He has performed with many orchestras, including the Tommy Olivencia Orchestra and the Willie Rosario orchestras. Santa Rosa's unique style of "soneo" (improvisation) in salsa that allowed him to be popular in both the "tropical" and "romantic" styles of the music.

Santa Rosa was also the first performer of tropical salsa to perform a concert at the Carnegie Hall Theater in New York City, where he appeared as the opening number, with his own interpretation of the salsa song, "Represento" (I Represent), composed by Lou Briel. This performance was streamed live at the hall and then released as an album. The four-minute unscripted addition he made to his song "Perdoname" (Forgive Me) that solidified his improvisational skills was a highlight of the evening. Santa Rosa had to memorize his own improvised lines for forthcoming concerts after this live version became such a hit, and Perpetoname became his closing song to his shows.
Santa Rosa performed on "La Puertorrique" in 1990, which included Andy Montaez; the Billboard Lo Nuestro Award for Best Male Singer was given in the same year. He also appeared in the film La pareja dispareja (The Odd Couple), alongside Luis Vigoreaux and Rafo Muiz. Santa Rosa performed "De cara al viento" in Spanish for the Japanese audience in 1995, where the record label company translated all of the songs in Japanese. Caballero de la Salsa, Vol. 2, was released in 1996, and he appeared in the First "Festival Presidente" in the Dominican Republic (a Latin music festival sponsored by local Presidente beer). He appeared with Andy Montaez in Lincoln Center in 1997 and with Olga Taón at the Universal Studios Amphitheater in Hollywood, California later that year.
