Gigi Becali Career

Political career

Becali, a candidate of the "League of Italian Communities in Romania" in 2000, was elected for the seat reserved for the Italian minority in the Chamber of Deputies. He received 16,266 votes (0.1 percent) around the country, out of which 7,677 in Ilfov County. Nonetheless, he lost to Ileana Stana-Ionescu, who received only 2,943 votes in a single constituency. Becali contest the results, but it is not the total number of votes that matters, according to Romanian election law; the individual who has the largest percentage in one constituency wins the seat reserved for that national minority.

He has been president of the New Generation – Christian Democrats Party (PNG-CD) since January 2004, having been its nominee in the 2004 presidential election (184,560 votes).

Becali's 2004 electoral campaign featured clips from the film Mihai Viteazul movie (directed by Sergiu Nicolaescu), whose main character was played by Amza Pellea. Oana Pellea, Amza's daughter, suing Becali for posting Amza Pellea's image without permission and winning 35,000 lei (roughly US$12,000) in damages.

He had disputes with Corneliu Vadim Tudor, another ultranationalist politician, on occasion. These disputes were usually based on insult exchanges between the two groups. He had another disagreement with Prime Minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu, who referred to him as a "cockroach-politician" and a "Very Important Papagal" (papagal means "parrot" in Romanian, and is regarded as an insult).

He pledged that his party would bring a "Cultural revolution" to Romania in December 2006.

His party (PNG-CD) gained 4.8 percent of the popular vote in the European Parliament in November 2007, but only below the 5% needed for membership in the EU's governing body. The same thing happened in December 2008, which shocked many people.

Becali ran on Vain's Greater Romania Party (PRM) ticket in June 2009 and gained a seat in the European Parliament. However, Romanian judges upheld a travel ban on Becali for the duration of an unlawful incarceration probe launched by police, prohibiting him from serving in the EP; Becali, meanwhile, claimed he wanted to remain in Brussels and ordered the justice system to arrest him in Belgium. All limits on him were lifted eventually by the Romanian supreme court.

He also ran in the 2009 presidential elections, where he received 1.9 percent of the vote.

He was nominated for a deputy mandate in Bucharest, Sector 6, on the National Liberal Union's (PNL) side in 2012. He negotiated with PNL, PNG-CD's alliance, but the overwhelming majority of liberals were against this step. Becali joined PNL on October 19th, 2012, with the help of party president Crin Antonescu. He won the election in the 25th uninominal college with 65% of the votes. Becali applied to serve on the Judicial Commission of the Chamber of Deputies, receiving promises that he would be named. After being banned from PNL, he resigned from the sport. The Chamber of Deputies declared the Becali's term as a parliamentarian on May 29th.

For tonight's Europa Conference League match, West Ham is expected to stop Romanian fans from being home

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 8, 2022
In their Europa Conference League group-stage opener on Thursday evening, the Premier League hosted Romanian outfit Steaua Bucharest at the London Stadium. With a ticket allocation of 3,125, football manager Gigi Becali (bottom right), 10,000 would rock up, sparking concerns among Hammers supporters, Sportsmail reports that West Ham has devised a series of steps to prevent this from happening. Seats in the home end are expected to be limited to supporters with a previous booking history, and no tickets are distributed to Romanian customers even if they have never had reservations before. In addition, FCSB supporters attempting to access the home end will not be permitted inside, and if any fans are discovered inside, they will be immediately banned. Thousands of FCSB supporters (left) flocked to the Hammers' site on Wednesday in the hopes of purchasing a ticket, some more than eight hours before the ticket shop opened at 5 p.m.
