Gennaro Contaldo Career

Career

Contaldo left Italy in 1969 for England, where he spent time in the kitchen at Barnet General Hospital. He married in 1974 and had three children; later, he had two more children with his new partner. He started an Italian antiques business for a brief period before returning to cooking. Contaldo's inspiration to cook in England was mainly due to the availability of game and fungi, two key elements of Amalfitan cuisine. Contaldo has often expressed his passion for foraged wild food, particularly mushrooms, in media interviews.

Contaldo worked in St John's Wood and Antonio Carluccio's Neal Street Restaurant in London's Covent Garden. In 1998, he left Neal Street.

In 1999, Contaldo opened the Passione restaurant in Charlotte Street, London. The Tio Pepe Restaurant Awards named Passione "Best Italian Restaurant 2005" to the chef. Passione closed in March 2009 due to reduced sales as a result of the late-2000s recession.

Contaldo's first book, Passione, which is dedicated to the Amalfitan style of cooking, was released in April 2003. For 2003, the cookbook was named 'Gourmand World Cookbook - Best Italian Cuisine Book.' In September 2006, Gennaro's Italian Year, his second book, was published. Gennaro's Italian Home Cooking, his third book, was published in September 2008, and his fourth, Gennaro's Easy Italian, was released in March 2010. In September 2016, his most recent book, "Panetteria: Gennaro's Italian Bakery," was published.

Contaldo is also known for his friendship with Jamie Oliver, who first appeared at Neal Street Restaurant in the 1990s. Since being close friends and colleagues, the two chefs have developed a strong friendship. When Contaldo's restaurant, Passione, was burgled in 2003, Oliver even gave up a reward for information. Contaldo has appeared on several of Oliver's television shows, including The Naked Chef. In a contest against legendary Italian-American chef Mario Batali, he made a comedic appearance on Food Network's Iron Chef America. Contaldo has also created menus for Oliver's UK restaurant chain Jamie's Italian, in which he is also a business partner.

"The Two Greedy Italians" a four-part series for the BBC in 2011, he toured the Italian regions with Antonio Carluccio in 2011. This was followed by "The Two Greedy Italians: Still Hungry," a second series that aired in 2012.

Contaldo has appeared on several other television shows. On Saturday morning's show Kitchen, he set a new record of 16.36 seconds for making a three-egg omelette. He was also named with a Guinness World Record for the most ravioli made in two minutes in 2014.

Contaldo is the Italian holiday company Citalia's brand ambassador.

Contaldo has been posting on his YouTube channel since 2010, when he created it. He also appears on Jamie Oliver's YouTube channel a lot. Contaldo's channel has more than 36 million views as of July 2022, and he has 600,000 followers.
