Gaudi Career

Early career (Italy 1981–1995)

Gaudi's career began in 1981 in Italy as a keyboard player for new-wave bands, including Wild Planet, Red Light, and Violet Eves, the latter band playing a vital part in Italy's underground music scene, mixing electronica, post-punk, and traditional Italian melodies. He joined the Bamboo Company, a reggae band that spent five years and honed his abilities as a reggae music producer a few years ago.

Gaudi began to gain success in the underground music scene in the 1980s, especially in the case of The Gang (album 'Barricada', 1985) and Disciplinatha (album "Abbemo paziento 40 years, or a basta), 1987).

Gaudi, three members of the Bamboo Company, formed Raptus, one of the first Hip Hop bands to use Italian lyrics, in 1986, when Italian rocker Vasco Rossi and his production team Terryball were spotted together on their next single. Although hopes for the project were high, unfortunately, the band was uninhibited and the band was not active.

Gaudi's first solo project as a solo artist with the name Lele Gaudi in 1987 launched what was to be the first 'Raggamuffin' album written in Italian. The album was finished in 1988, but record companies were uneasy with the idea of an untested formula and unwilling to take the chance of releasing it. Gaudi spent the next two years searching for a good bargain. During this time, he also spent time in Jamaica, testing his hypothesis, and receiving valuable feedback about his work's quality.

Gaudi, aka. Ohm Guru and Frank Nemola, formed Tubi Forti, a production team that would be well-known in the indie circuit for their 12in single 'Stop al panico', Sud Sound System, and others. Gaudi also released a number of 12in singles on Irma Records as: National Rare Groove (singles 'Lets Dance' and 'Talking To You,'), Dr Muff & Crazy Stuff (single 'Don't Forget This'), the former being Gaudi's first experiment with world music fused with electronica, the latter being Gaudi's first experiment with world music fused with electronica.

Gaudi signed his first major record deal with Polygram/Universal for his solo project as Lele Gaudi, starring Crucial Robbie, and was filmed in Jah Tubby's Studio two years ago. The single's official videoclip received major exposure and high rotation on MTV, resulting in immediate success in Italy.

Gaudi's debut album 'Basta Poco' was released in 1991, followed by a solid exposure by the media and appearance on many TV shows on the Italian national television RAI, culminating in his first award, "Best Italian New Coming Act 1991" from RAI.

Anni Fa's second 12in single '1990' was released later this year by Polygram/Mercury Records and was immediately barred from Vatican City due to the city's'sensitive material,' despite the fact that it did not impact record sales.

Gaudi was supported by reggae band WDX for the two years following the album's success.

Gaudi created his signature in 1993 in an interview with Italian singer Ricky Gianco, an artist well-known for his upfront social commentary. Gaudi became a household name thanks to the exposure gained from the initiative.

He performed on 'Lei sta con te,' by Glezos in the same year as he collaborated with Francesco Baccini for a raggamuffin vocal part of his album 'Lei sta con te.'

Gaudi began playing with the Theremin, a new musical instrument that blends its ethereal electronic sound with dub and psychedelic music, resulting in the unveiling of a number of 12in singles under the moniker Dub Alchemist.

Gaudi moved to London in 1995 and formed "Metatron Studio London," establishing the record label 'Sub Signal' and the production team "Terra Terra" in collaboration with DJ Angelino. Cool Jack's 1996 No.1 UK dance chart 'Jus Come' by Cool Jack was among the pair's remixes, including one from AM:PM Records.

Gaudi then joined Harmony Management and began his career as a remixer, appearing on top 301 in the United Kingdom, casting for their single 'Growth', Marc Williams, Love City, L.A. Believers, and more. Sound of Anatomy, an ambient concept album released under the moniker Ultraviolet Zero, was Gaudi's first full-length studio album entirely created in his London studio. Gaudi created music for BBC, Channel 4, RAI, ITV, and several other MTV soundtracks and jingles in the ensuing two years. Gaudi composed the music for the MTV Awards 1998, making it later a hit anthem, resulting in the introduction of the 12in single Cadillac Kitsch with the moniker Mad Master Moog. Gaudi began making music for commercials, following the success of his composition in relation to TV shows, such as: Sony PlayStation, Longines, Fiat, Seat, Fiorucci, and The Express.

He wrote the song "Non ti Scrivero" for Italian popstar Irene Grandi in 1998, which appeared on her double platinum selling album 'Pertroppo'.

Gaudi's third album 'Earthbound' was released on a triple vinyl by Bustin Loose Recordings, giving him worldwide exposure and a strong exposure that led to his tracks appearing on several compilations. The album featured 39 musicians from around the world, including Jamaican raggamuffin musician General Levy, Indian singer Kiren Sambhi, and Sardinian vocal virtuos Tenores di Neoneli, Trio Cocco and Antonio Testa, who provided the track Stalagmite. Later this year, Sub Signal's dub version of Earthbound titled 'Earthbound in Dub' was also released. Gaudi went to Africa in 2000 and spent some time in Burkina Faso experiencing the indigenous people's lifestyle and environment, where he listened to a number of African musicians for his forthcoming album Bass, Sweat & Tears. The pair branded themselves 'Orchestral World Groove' and spent residencies at prestigious London venues such as Cargo, Fabric, Dogstar, Plan B, and Redstar in 2000, marking the start of the four-year relationship with world-music exponent DJ Pathaan. The pair have recorded tracks on many compilations and tours around the world, including Roskilde in Denmark, Skol Beat in Brazil, The Big Chill and Gatecraser in England, and even toured abroad, performing at top-end venues and festivals such as Roskilde in Denmark, Skol Beat in Brazil, The Big Chill and Gatecraser in England.

Gaudi collaborated with French entrepreneur/engineer Michel Moglia and his music instrument The Fire Organ (Orgue A Feu), a 20-ton metal pipe structure that works with fire, in the same year. The pair created 'Elemental', an opera for Fire Organ and Theremin that culminated in a spectacular double performance at the Colosseum in Rome to a global audience of over 350,000.
