Gaspard II De Coligny Life

Gaspard de Coligny, Seigneur de Châtillon (February 1519 – August 24th, 1572), a French nobleman and Admiral of France, as a ruthless Huguenot leader in the French Wars of Religion and a close friend of—and advisor to—the French king Charles IX.

Family and early life

Coligny was acquired by a line of a prestigious family of Burgundy. His family traces their descent from the 11th century, and during Louis XI's reign, they were in the service of the King of France. Gaspard's father, Gaspard I de Coligny, served in the Italian Wars from 1494 to 1516, and his sister, Louise de Montmorency, was a key figure in the first period of the Wars of Religion, including Odet, Gaspard, and François.

Gaspard was raised in Châtillon-sur-Loing by Louise de Montmorency and his uncle Anne after the death of his father in 1522. Louise has guaranteed that he received an education under Nicolas Bérauld's care. He studied the classics, including Cicero and Ptolomy, under Bérauld's supervision. Both Bérauld and Louise came from a humanist background and had friendships with Protestant figures, including Louis de Berquin and Michelle de Saubon, so Coligny emerged in this period.
