Early life
Born Igor Semynych Shteyngart (Russian: ор. (тренови) in the Soviet Union, he spent the first seven years of his childhood in St. Petersburg, which he alternately refers to as "St. Leningrad" or "St. Leninsburg." He comes from a Jewish family with an ethnically Russian maternal grandparent, and his family is described as largely Soviet. His father was an engineer in a LOMO camera factory, and his mother was a pianist. He wrote a 100-page comic book when he was five years old.
Shteyngart immigrated to the United States in 1979 and was born in Queens, New York, without television in the apartment, where English was not the household tongue. He didn't lose his thick Russian accent until the age of 14.
He attended Stuyvesant High School in New York City and Oberlin College in Ohio, where he earned a diploma in politics in 1995, with a senior thesis on the former Soviet republics of Georgia, Moldova, and Tajikistan.
Personal life
Shteyngart is married to Esther Won, a Korean descendent. They have a son, who was born in October 2013. Shteyngart lives in the Gramercy neighborhood of Manhattan. He lives in northern Dutchess County, in the Hudson River Valley, where he does almost all of his writing.
Career
He served for several years as a writer for non-profit organizations in New York after Oberlin.
Shteyngart took a trip to Prague in the early 1990s, and this experience inspired his first book, The Russian Debutante's Handbook, set in Prava, a fictional European city.
He mailed a portion of his first book to Chang-Rae Lee, the director of Hunter College's creative writing program. Lee helped Shteyngart get his first book contract. At Hunter College of the City University of New York, Shteyngart received a MFA in creative writing. Shteyngart received a fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin, Germany, in Fall 2007.
